Gaoling Dongxiao art（高陵洞箫艺术） is a kind of folk music, one of Shaanxi Province intangible cultural heritage protection projects. Dongxiao is the folk wind instrument handed down from ancient China. Hu Daoman Dongxiao playing technique is rare in Shaanxi province as he strip Dongxiao (a vertical bamboo flute) from accompaniment of musical instruments, and turn traditional deep, desolate and lingering playing into loud, bright and joyful playing.
There is a place called “cabbage heart” in the hinterland of Guanzhong plain, where there is fertile land and flat landscape. Jinghe River and Weihe River gathers here, so there is the famous “entirely different” landscape. And it is the place where Xi’an Gaoling County lies. Gaoling has rich intangible cultural heritage projects. Gaoling Dongxiao, Gaoling folk song, Gaoling folk festive lantern making techniques and Dr. Han bone setting techniques are all included in Shaanxi Province Intangible Heritage List. Compared with other non-heritage projects, Gaoling Dongxiao has a little legend and mystery.
Strictly speaking, Gaoling Dongxiao should be called Hu Daoman Dongxiao. In the 1970s, the name Hu Daoman is well-known in the whole Gaoling County, as well as in the provincial capital of Xi'an. It was him who flourished Dongxiao art. Hu Daoman Dongxiao art has different charm, unique playing techniques which is rare in the province. It surely has a remarkable contribution to the promotion of Dongxiao art and development of folk music. Gaoling Dongxiao art is also useful for the accumulation of Chinese folk music history. And it has important academic value for the protection of cultural heritage.
