We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Mt. Wutai

Mt. Wutai (五台山) is called “the four celebrated mountains of Chinese Buddhism” together with Mt. Emei in Sichuan, Mt.Jiuhua in Anhui, as well as Mt. Putuo in Zhejiang. Mt. Wutai is highly praised as the most holy land of Chinese Buddhism. In 2009, Mt. Wutai was listed into the world heritage by UNESCO.

Just like its name means, the Mt. Wutai is consisted of five peaks, namely the Northern Peak of Yedou, Eastern Peak of Viewing the Sea, Western Peak of Hanging Moon, Southern Peak of Charm and Middle Peak of Green Rock. each of which is as flat as terrace on top. The highest peak is about 3,058 meters above sea level, named “the roof of North China”. The average altitude of Mt. Wutai is above 1000 m, therefore, the climate is cool even in summer.

The survival completed temples in Mt. Wutai amount to 98. These temples make the mountain a natural museum of Chinese ancient architecture. Magnificent sculptures, stone inscriptions, mural paintings and calligraphies in those temples are all with great artistic value.

Xiantong Temple is the largest temple with the longest history. Originally, the temple was set up in Han Dynasty and reconstructed in Ming Dynasty. Covering an area of about 80,040 square kms, the temple embraces over 400 buildings with various styles.

Tayuan Monastery is located west of Prominence Monastery. An enormous white dagoba stands out in prominence among a cluster of temples and a grove of trees. It is regarded as the signpost of Mount Wutai. The dagoba is fifty meters high and hung with 250 bells that jingle pleasantly in the breeze.

Tayuan Temple, which means pagoda yard temple, is located in the south side of Xiantong Temple. It is named because of the large white pagoda which is a symbol of Mount Wutai.
