We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Pudong Storytelling

Pudong storytelling(浦东说书) is a folk art of singing and talking for Han Chinese people in Shanghai. It was originated in the east of the Huangpu River, including Chuansha, Nanhui, Fengxian. Mainly in Chuansha, Nanhui, Fengxian, Jinshan and Songjiang, Qingpu and other suburbs whole territory. It is an important part of Shanghai culture.

In addition to performances in Shanghai Old City, Pudong storytelling has spread to Zhejiang Pinghu, Jiaxing and other places. It is also known as Shanghai Pudong book storytelling and farmer’s books. Pudong storytelling is a big drama genre in Shanghai second only to the "funny commedy". It is a very kind of Han traditional folk art with local characteristics.

In the beginning, Pudong storytelling was related to religious belief. Those storytellers who lived in Pudong areas beat the cymbal, combined the tunes and tones of Pudong dialects, played and sang all by themselves. Later, they absorbed the impromptu melody of folk song, field song, fishing song etc. finally get rid of the religious origin.

Pudong storytelling has a rich ordinary local flavor. As most of the storytellers before the liberation of China are farmers, craftsmen and poor people in the city, they always worked in the fields during busy season and performed in slack season.

The storytellers would gathered in the tea house in the town during festivals or temple fairs to perform storytelling for two times. They would perform in Pudong dialects, wear long gowns and hold a cymbal. When the performance began, the storyteller would beat the cymbal with his chopstick and sang four verses. And then he would speak the chapter and then go on the long literary piece. During the performance, the storyteller would beat the cymbal now and then in order to express the ideas, feelings, and actions of the characters’ pause and transformation in the book.

Pudong storytelling is the main force of pudong local culture in the pudong new area. The current professional singing pudong storyteller is hard to find. But it is still a popular form of art form in pudong--the birthplace of the Pudong storytelling, which also often take the form of ensemble singing, singing with actions in amateur vocal performance.
