Monodrama(独脚戏) is also called low comedy, is a Han popular types of traditional folk art originated in Shanghai, popular in Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and other southern regions. Because a variety of roles was originally played by only one actor, it is named one-man show. It is an important part of Shanghai culture.
Around 9 years of the Republic of China (1920), Shanghai civilized drama artist Wang Wuneng tell jokes, tell stories, sing opera, learning dialects, playing a variety of roles, claiming one-man show in congregations all by himself. In 16 years of the Republic of China, Wang Wuneng official listing his one-man show. In the same year, Hangzhou Jiang Xiaoxiao came to Shanghai and played one-man show, called "social funny." The following year, Liu Chunshan also began to play monodrama, known as the "trend funny." Three of the rise of one-man show was unique, later known as the "funny three people."
In 18 years of the Republic of China, the Shanghai World fairground invited a famous Five Class (10 people) one-man show artist to hold the weekly "slumber" in the name of "Five group" and increased the impact of the one-man show.
One-man show in the 1930s reached its heyday, employing more than 100 artists to play on stalls and fairground, churches and private radio studio, both wrote and performed. During the Anti-Japanese War, many one-man show actors participated into the war propaganda activities. In 31 years of the People’s Republic of China, initiated by Jiang Xiaoxiao composed exclusively played burlesque "smiled troupe." Monodrama artists started to play most of the burlesque.
From the early days of the war to the People's Republic of China, Yao Mushaung and Zhou Baichun appeared as "trendy funny", whose stage manners were with bookish. While the succession and development of the previous track, they also compiled and played a lot of new scripts. From the early 1950s to the early 1960s, one-man show of "singing and talking" send to get a larger development. Many actors often played one-man show, "talking" or "talking and singing," in the broadcasting station.
Since 1978, a number of special one-man show and play one-man show of comic troupe was gradually recovered, they are: Shanghai Opera Troupe (later renamed Shanghai Comic Troupe), Shanghai Opera Troupe Broadcast Television Team, the Shanghai People's Comic Troupe, Shanghai Youth Comic Art Troupe. In 2008, monodrama was included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage.
