Fengxian folk opera（奉贤山歌剧） is Shanghai local popular drama genre in the evolution of the development of the private sector by the emerging from the Han operas. It is an important part of Shanghai culture. Following Songhu opera, Comic opera Fengxian folk opera is Shanghai native's third-largest opera, dubbed as the "Shanghai's only daughter." It is mainly popular in Fengxian, Jinshan, and Nanhui three counties.
This drama is developed on the basis of the Fengxian folk tune. Before the 1950s, it is very popular to sing folk songs in Fengxian and the surrounding countryside, and formed Dongxiang folk songs and xixiang folk songs which is popular with the local people.
Fengxian folk songs has a long history. In the Qing Dynasty, Fengxian folk songs were very popular all over the county. Folk pioneer ancestor is Zhang Liang in Han Dynasty. When they were working, folk song singers sing the folk song so as to cheer up. In the summer night, they sing folk songs to amuse themselves. So Fengxian folk song has a deep mass base.
In the end of Ming Dynasty and the early of Qing Dynasty, the folk song singers who scattered around voluntarily got together to established a small folk song group, called as “folk song troupe”. They use their voice to liven things up in marriages and funerals for local families. The folk song troupe is the earliest prototype of modern folk song troupe.
By 1950s, Fengxian various communes have set up a "farmer amateur propaganda team". They play the division of roles when there is slack rehearsal with the accompaniment of folk songs, in the village field and gradually formed a unique Wu region, with rich Jiangnan style tunes.
Fengxian County Art Troupe was established in 1956, the majority of whose members are each commune backbone of art propaganda teams. In 1961, they rehearsed the first Fengxian small folk song opera drama "Mei Girl and Peach Boy". Later, the show caused a sensation in Shanghai.
In April 1962, Fengxian Art troupe officially converted into Fengxian folk troupe. Folk song board chamber opera became a complete system which has rich minor tunes and it is deeply loved by the people of Shanghai. So Fengxian folk song became Fengxian local new operas.
