Shanghai Longhua Temple Fair(上海龙华庙会) is a traditional Shanghai fair which has impact on the Shanghai regions and the whole Yangtze River Delta region. The center of Longhua Temple Fair is the Longhue Temple, mainly in the area of north of Shanghai Longhua Road Maugong Bridge (Huarong Road), south of the Zhongshan road (now Longhua Road) and at the intersection Tianyaoqiao road. Longhua Temple Area is now in the Xuhui District Longhua Street. Xuhui District is one of the fastest growing economic and cultural center of the region, Shanghai area. It is an important part of Shanghai culture.
Longhua Temple Fair is not a simple faith activity, commodity trade and entertainment is almost as important as the activities and beliefs. Longhua ancient town has an extensive waterway as the Longhua Harbor almost pass through half of Shanghai. Longhua harbor also connected with the Huangpu River, the vessel through Huangpu River estuary into the sea, thus communicating the broader geographic ties with Longhua Harbor.
Longhua Temple Fair was developed because of its temple fair and Longhua Temple also benefited from the Longhua Temple fair. Occurrence of Longhua Temple Fair can be traced to the Tang Dynasty. From the Ming Dynasty, the temple was developed from a single set of Buddha temple to a Buddha, commerce, entertainment integrated temple. This is a development period of the temple.
Since the time of the Qing Dynasty, the temple fair was being pushed by the third day of the third lunar month to the fifteenth day of the third lunar month, combined with peach blossom tours. With the expansion of the size and influence of the temple fair, the temple fair also expanded entertainment content. Temple fair entered the heyday.
After the 1920s, the temple fair took place a second transformation, transformed from rural to urban temple fair, which is its transition. After the liberation, the government involved in the organization of Longhua temple fair and the temple end spontaneous state, entering new phase.
Entertainment practices is an important part of the Longhua Temple fair. These practices are mostly entertainment evolved from the Han Chinese traditions or local traditions evolution, and is closely related to local production and lifestyle. The main entertainment practices include: outing tours peach, shadow play and hub concept drama, dragon and lion dance and swing lake boat show.
In the development process of Longhua Temple fair, it also produced many legends, poetry, proverbs and other literary works. Production of these works illustrate the important role both in the public life of the temple fair, and also reflects the enormous influence of the temple fair and its strong radiation.
