Jingwu Sports Association(精武体育会) is one of the mass organizations Chinese martial arts. It was founded by Huo Yuanjia in Shanghai in 1910, teaching martial arts as the main activity. By the autumn of 1911, which the 1st martial artists was held on in Shanghai, and afterwards, many people required to send teachers to teach martial arts. Soon, a branch was set in in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. There were also three branches setting up in Shanghai. It is an important part of Shanghai culture.
From 1918 onwards, Jingwu Sports Asociation has set up branches in Wuhan, Guangzhou, Foshan, Shantou, Xiamen and other cities. After 1920, there were branches in Southeast Asia, such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya, Saigon, Malacca and other areas where there are overseas Chinese. In Kuala Lumpur, a women's Jingwu Sports Association was set up. The national school teachers went to teach martial arts. After the war began, the activity was intermittent. After the founding of People's Republic of China, the activity of Jingwu Sports Association was defunct, and later been restored. It is an important part of Shanghai culture.
On July 7, 1910 (the first day of the sixth lunar month), Chinese Jingwu gymnastics was formally established. The venue is located in the west of the bridge Zhabei. Huo Yuanjia personally teach students, as well as his apprentice, such as Liu Zhensheng, Zhao Hanjie, Chen Qimei and Nong Jinsun would came to teach other students. The first batch of Jingwu Sports Association has 73 students. They use traditional martial arts approach to teach boxing. The first batch of trainees included Chen Gongzhe, Qiu Liang, Li dichu, Yao Tanbo, Wang Weifan, Lu Weichang, etc. Since then, the first Chinese folk sports organizations was born.
While Huo Yuanjia Jingwu would preside carefully cultivate backbone to ride on the crest of success, but was "framed" by Japanese. After oral intake of the drugs sold by the Japanese which exacerbated hemoptysis disease, he was sent to the Xinzha Chinese Red Cross hospital for treatment. In two weeks, Huo Yuanjia was dead. His sudden death makes Jingwu gymnastics lose the pillar and the pause of Jingwu Sports Association.
Since 1979, Jingwu Sports Association restored activities in Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, and other places. Yuyao Jingwu Sports Association also have recovery activities. Beginning in 1990, Jingwu Sports Association carried out contacts and exchanges with overseas organizations.
Taiwan also set up Jingwu Sports Association. Taiwan Jingwu Sports Association was founded in January 27, 1996. President Huang Lianshun (English: Huang Lien-Shun) is the founder of Taiwan Jingwu Sports Association. He is the first Taiwanese to enter the Chinese sports the highest institution - Beijing Sport University Wushu Graduate Department to get further study (high visiting scholars). He is a martial Arts lover and martial arts scholar. He is the famous people who has influences across the Taiwan Strait on Chinese martial arts. He is also the martial arts perform instructor of Chinese Taipei national team.
