Jiangnan Sizhu（江南丝竹） is a branch of the "Sizhu" music, popular in Shanghai, Nanjing and other southern regions. It is an important part of Shanghai culture. Sizhu refers to two types of musical instruments: string instruments and wind instruments. String instruments refer to silk and bamboo musical instruments such as the erhu, pipa, Chung-hu and so on. Sizhu instruments is a stringed instrument, mainly used for stringed bowed and plucked. Wind musical instrument is made of bamboo as material instruments such as flute, Sheng, Xiao and so on.
Jiangnan Sizhu has a lot of variety and extensive repertoire whose playing techniques are mature. It is good at large divertimento (tunes associated prefix), is one of China widely spread musical species. In recent decades, there have been some changes in Jiangnan Sizhu. The performers are attempt to be innovative in terms of classical music or orchestra, playing techniques aspects, namely, the inheritance and development simultaneously.
String and wind music is a streaming music in our historical heritage. Since the Tang and Song dynasties, there is a lot of literature written records genre of music in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai area. Shanghai and surrounding areas is a kind of ultimate fun naming and mature areas for string and wind music.
Shanghai's early string and wind music was flourished in the late 19th and early 20th century. In the beginning, it did not have a settled name that most people call it "string and wind instrumens" or "country music". Until the 1940s, string and wind music covers the entire Shanghai area and suburbs. According to the existing literature records, the title of "Sizhu" was first seen in 1954's "Shanghai folk observe the performance of classical music," and the Preparatory Committee for the country music group sponsored by the Association of Shanghai "national optimism Mount Recital" programs list. From the early 20th century to the 1950s, the Shanghai region has 428 documented Sizhu social tropes, showing the scale and impact of Sizhu in Shanghai area and suburban. Shanghai's string and wind music activity lasts for more than a century. During its heyday, string and wind music covers the entire area and the suburbs of Shanghai. String and wind music enthusiasts often conduct activities in a fixed place to play, interact and jointly pondering that kind of music genre. So Sizhu has much development and it was once called "country music." After the mid-20th century, wind and string music plays sometimes good, sometimes bad, but never buried. However, team activities and playing lovers in recent years but increased and expanded.
Jiangnan Sizhu is a highly entertaining, which is a social fashion Shanghai. People often gather in private houses or restaurants to ensemble string and wind music so as to "go on nature conservation, and clean up the filth of evil" and the exchange skills. Jiangnan Sizhu also plays in weddings and festivals. According to the nature of the show, the performers can be divided into "clear guest performer" (also known as the "run guest performer") and occupational social performer.
