Shanghai paper-cut art(海派剪纸艺术) is the Han folk art with cultural characteristics in Shanghai. Shanghai style paper cutting was emerged in 19th century. In a hundred years of historical evolution, the Shanghai paper-cut gradually formed a unique "Shanghai" style, so it has a certain position in the traditional Chinese paper-cut art. In 2005, Shanghai style paper cutting was approved by Shanghai municipal Party committee as the Shanghai traditional protection techniques.
Paper-cut art commonly known as paper cutting and pattern and its inheritance of in the Shanghai area has a long history, and always accompanied by folk activities, to win the common like citizens. Remember the past when I was a kid, we almost everyone as a child, would play on one paper cutting, carved a couple of things, and over the past century the traditional paper-cut mainly use at the age of etiquette layout, make a paper-cut and embroidery pattern, color lighting, etc. Paper-cut lovers depict the beauty of life gradually from the zigzag lines of euphemism, convey the beautiful feeling of life.
In the book "Chinese Folk Culture Series - cut art," compiled by the Ministry of Culture, there lists the Shanghai two paper-cut artists: Wang Zigan and Lin Ximing. Wang Zaigan is dead now. Lin Ximing is now an honorary president of Chinese paper-cut Association, president of the Shanghai Paper Cutting Association, Shanghai Artists Association, and Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy first class artist.
Wang Zigan combined the smooth and delicacy of the south and the rough and grand of the north, with proper integration, inherited the excellent skills of their predecessors, showing a very strong artistic personality. Therefore, his works formed the characteristics of concise form, exaggeration and decorative features, flowers, birds, fish and insects, animals, landscapes, figures were all involved in his works.
Lin Ximing is the disciple of Su Weishuo. He has created hundreds of paper cutting works reflecting rural and urban changes in China in more than 70 years. His paper cutting works successively published in newspapers and books, renowned in folk art area and he also become a miracle of shanghai folk arts. His paper cutting works combined the exquisite and simple feature of traditional Chinese paper cutting and the rough and association of modern paper cutting techniques. He bravely uses freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting techniques, integrates paper cutting art and calligraphy, thus becoming a unique talent in Chinese paper cutting art.
