Fengxian local paper art(奉贤乡土纸艺)is an important part of Shanghai culture. In the southern suburbs of Shanghai Fengxian, ancient paper art is a favorite art. By engraving, cutting, folding Han folk artists display their craftsmanship. As time goes by, engraved paper, paper cutting, origami art constantly sublimated, thus becoming essential decorative supplies in people's lives.
Fengcheng engraved paper, can be traced back to the fourth year of Qing Emperor Yongzheng. Its artistic charm was a must in southern region of Yangtze River. Before liberation, those artists who making a living of the "incense" are all good at engraved paper. Most of the content of the engraved paper drawn from the classic ancient stories, folklore, good luck and so on. Such as the characters in "Eight Immortals", "Water Margin", "Journey to the West." After liberation, the theme has been broadened to a number of modern works.
In the past, it was popular to bury offerings to the dead, incense list of these offerings had unique style of each division. Fortunately, there is an old man named Gu Fuguang (formerly known as: Gu Xuexiang) old man, 85 years old, still paying attention, and occasionally also engrave papers. His fifth son Gu Guibiao leaned by his father's side and he has learnt the first-hand true mass. Now the most worrying is that its successors. All young man, let alone children, are reluctant to engrave paper as his lifelong career and cast apprenticeship. The Han Chinese traditional art has been in fault state, if not timely protection and rescue, it will be on the verge of peril.
