Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge (南京长江大桥) is between the Pukou district and Xiaguan district of Nanjing, which is the first dual purpose of highway-railway bridge spanning over Yangtze River in China. The whole bridge is consisted of two doubles, the upper side for highway and the under side for railway. Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge has important significance in the history of bridge construction.
Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the first bridge over the Yangtze River designed and built by China’s own technique. The upper highway bridge is 4,589 meters long, 15 meters wide with two 2-meter wide sidewalks. The under railway bridge is 6,772 meters long and 14 meters wide. In 1960, the bridge was recoded in the Guinness World Record as the longest highway-railway bridge in the world.
The bridge was built in 1960 and put into practice in 1968. The construction of the bridge has reduced the river crossing time from about two hours by ferry to the course of only several minutes. The bridge at night is extremely charming. The illumination of 1,024 floodlights on the banisters, 540 halogen lights on the bridge towers and 150 pairs of lamps of the sidewalks make the bridge look like a pearl string lying on the Yangtze River.
