Baimiao village concert (白庙音乐会) is a kind of religious music performed with wind instrument such as sheng, which was played by monk originally. Its well-preserved performing form and music scores provide great value of history, culture and art.
Up to now, Baimiao village concern has handed down from over twenty generations by oral or mental instruction. It has been kept for more than 300 years in Baimiao village. Baimiao village concert is played with 10 musical instruments including sheng, pipe, flute, gong, cymbals, big cymbals, small cymbals, drum, woodblock and qin. Over 70 music scores were collected by old artists, however, the remaining 30 ones were lost.
The greatest feature of Baimiao village concert is the style of religious music. Its solemn, bold, high-pitched, rhythmic, melodious and elegant manner combines both the tranquil religious music and the pristine folk music. The performing lineup is composed of 15 person in total. There are 9 or 11 person on stage, among which 5 person play percussion music and other 4 person play wind instruments or 6 person play percussion music and other 5 person play wind instruments.
Baimiao village concert was destroyed during the period of the Cultural Revolution and recovered until 1985. Currently, many classic songs have been failed to hand down from past generations The performing group is in the danger of extinction because of the lack of funds and the shortage of younger players.
