Description: Jino ethnic minority (基诺族) is an ancient nationality, settling down in Jino village, Jinghong county, Xishuangbanna Tai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan province. The word “Jino” means “following maternal uncle”. The population of Jino is as few as 25,000. It is defined as the 56th nationality of China.
Language: Jino language.
Religion: In the past, Jino worshiped ancestors and believed that everything is spiritual. They respect for the elders. Every village is managed by a father and a mother of the village. Jino people look up to the sun. In all works of their life reflect the respect to the sun. They embroider the pattern of sun on underwaists and bags. Sun drum is an important divine instrument. The drum is inserted into 17 wooden piples, symbolizing the sunshine.
Clothing Character: Jino women are dressed in collarless short coat with opening fronts. The bottom of coat is spelled cross-over design with red, yellow, green, blue, black and white cloth wicks. Inside the coat, they often match a heart-shaped bellyband that is decorated with embroidered patters, colorful pearls and silver accessories. The lower part of body is a short skirt.
Jino femals living in Xishuangbanna, no matter married or not, are used to wear a black triangular steeple hat with decorative patterns.
Jino men like to wear white collarless coat with colorful stripes on the parts of forepart, chest, arm and wrist. They match white trousers and wear black turban. Jino men in Buyuan area have long hair and knitted long braids. Both men and women wear ear rings.
Food Culture: On festivals and happy occasions, they have to eat “Duosheng”, that is, the raw minced meat added condiments such as salt, chili, chopped ginger, peppermint and leel is rolled until it seems to be boiled. Ant egg is delicious meal for Jino peple. It is in rich nutrition and cooked by boil, fried, steamed or baked.
Festivals: Forging-iron festival (打铁节) is the most solemn, which is held in the lunar December and lasts for three days. They hold ox-slaughtering ceremony firstly, then perform sun dance accompanied with sun drum.
Handicraft: Jino women are skilled in spinning and weaving. When entering in Jino village, you can find whenever and wherever Jino are busy in spinning and weaving. With the two hands moving up and down, snow-white cottons turn into pieces of silver wires.
