We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Wa Nationality

Description: Wa nationality (佤族) mainly distributes in the southwest of Yunan province such as Ximeng, Cangyuan, Liancang, Menglian, Shuangjiang, Genma, Yongde, Zhenkang and so on. It takes up an population of over 350,000.

Language: Wa language.

Religion: The religion of Wa nationality is original natural worship. They recognized that all of the natural thing such as mountain and river has spirit which can bring disaster and fortune to human being.

Food Culture: Wa nationality takes rice as their main food. Those who live in Ximeng region like to boil rice into porridge together with vegetable and salt. Wa people in other regions prefer to dry rice. Chicken porridge an tea flower porridge are two tops in their daily dishes.

They eat pork, beef, chicken and some insects. Bee-keeping is common in Wa nationality. They make wine by themselves. Bitter tea is popular with Wa people for its function of refreshing. Chewing areca is the habit of Wa people in regardless of ages and sexes during their rest time.

Festivals: Wooden drum takes a sacred role for Wa nationality. Pulling wooden drum (拉木鼓) is viewed as the grand and solemn religion activities. Pulling wooden drum refers to cut off wood in forest, pull it back to the village, and make new drums instead of old ones.

It is held in the lunar November. The first day, they kill a cow to worship god in the day time. At night, young men cut off the pre-selected tree. In the early morning of the second day, all of the people in full regalia pull the tree back to the village. At the same time, they are dancing and singing.

It take more than 20 day to made a new drum. After finished, the drum is beaten immediately to announce the good news to the village. In the evening, all the people gather together around the wooden drum house, sing and dance to make a celebration. Up to now, the whole worship is finally finished.
