We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Hani Nationality

Description: Hani nationality (哈尼族) is an ancient minority in China, distributing between Yuan rive in Yunnan and Lancang river. According to the census in 2010, Hani nationality has a population of more than 1.630,000.

Language: Hani language

Religion: Hani nationality believes in polytheism and ancestor worship.

Clothing Character: Hani clothes are made from navy blue homespun. Hani men wrap black or white turban. They wear double-breasted coat, long trousers and wooden shoes. On festivals or date, Hani boy usually insert beautiful feature or flower in hair. Those who live along Lancang River are dressed in breasted jacket enchased two lines of coin on both side of lappet.

On festivals, Hani women wear indigo turban with beautiful embroidered patterns. Silverbuble and silver buttons are decorated in front of the coat. In the middle, hang a silver medal with eight corners. The shank should be wrapped with a piece of embroidered cloth.

Food Culture: Long-street banquet (长街宴) is held in the lunar October and lasts for three days. The whole village is divided into three groups to act as host in turn. The long-street banquet is 100-meter long, made up with delicious dishes.

The tender stem of wild banana is cut into thin slices, added moderate salt and rice porridge. After one or two days, it can be eaten.

Festivals: Yekuzha (耶苦扎) is traditional festival of Xishuangbanna. It begins from the first day of the Ox (a lucky day for Hani nationality) and lasts for three or four days. During the festival, people enjoy themselves with feasting and other kinds of entertainment instead of physical labor. They also held horse race, bamboo dance and play spinning top.

Zhalete (扎勒特) is the biggest festivals of Hani nationality, held in the lunar October and lasts for six days. On that day, each village killed one pig, then distributes it on average no matter how much weight it is.

Old Men Festival (老人节) is on the 15th day, the lunar December. On that day, youths put on traditional clothes to congratulate old men through unique dance and generous banquet.

Art: Hani nationality chooses to live in the middle of mountain. They usually build side room. Its flat roof is made from rustic wooden, fine wood and rice grass. The flat roof is the important place for their daily life.

Hani nationality is good at dance and sing. Their traditional instruments include sanxian, sixian, bawu and flute.
