Description: Baoan nationality (保安族) migrated from distant Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and now mostly settles down in Baoan, Dongxiang and Salar Autonomous Country of Jishishan. Baoan nationality has a population of 20,074 on the basis of the 6th census in 2010. They mainly engage in agriculture.
Language: They speak Baoan language that is belonged to the branch of Mongol under Altaic family.
Religion: Baoan nationality believes in Islam.
Clothing Character: The clothing of Baoan nationality is as the same as Hui nationality. Usually, men wear white hat, white shirt, black waistcoat and blue or grey trousers. While visiting relatives, they often wear Zhongshan coat or civilian clothes. Unmarried girls are dressed in colorful clothes and wear green silk hijiab. Married and middle-aged women wear white cap and put on black hijiab when going out. The clothing of elder women is in deep color mostly and white hijiab.
Food Culture: Baoan people live on wheat, highland barley and corn. They only mutton and beef and abstain from blood, pork, horse and donkey.
Festivals: Just like the Hui nationality, all most of the festivals are relative with religions such as Eid-ul-Fite, Eid-al-Adha and Milad al-Nai.
Eid-ul-Fitr is held on the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. They usually fast for one month as a commemoration. The fasting people eat breakfast before dawn, then refuse all food until the sun set. During Eid-ul-Fitr, every household do cleaning, put on new clothes and cook delicious food.
Maulid al-Nabi is held in memory of the birthday of Mohammed. On the day of festival, Muslem assemble in Mosque, chant, pray and tell the life story of Mohammed. Then Moslem volunteer ti donate meat, flour and cooking oil and made cooking and every odd jobs of one’s own accord. After the ceremony, they dine together.
Eid Adha is one of the grand festivals of Hui people, held on 10th, December of the Islamic calendar. They make prayer, kill animal and dine together as the main content. This festival originate from the story of prophet-Mohammed Ibrahim.
Mt. Lang festival—Baoan nationality is deeply in love in Mt. Lang. Every year, from late May to early June, Baoan people bring oil, meat, rice and tent, go for an outing on mountain, by the river bank or on the grassland. Art:
Arts: The traditional Baoan knife has a history of more than 100 years. It is highly reputed for the aesthetic appearance, superb workmanship and its sharpness. Baoan women are skilled in paper cutting and carving unique patterns on woodenware and household vessels.
