Description: Oroqen nationality (鄂伦春族) has the least population in Northeast of China, about 8,659 on the basis of census in 2010. They mainly inhabited in viridianscape in the Greater Khingan Mountains, living on hunting. In Yuan Dynasty, Oroqen nationality was called “people in the forest” and “Wildman in the forest”.
Language: Oroqen language belongs to Tunguska branch of Manchu-Tunguska language under Altaic family. They do not have their own writing language. They use Chinese character commonly, part of whom use Mongol script.
Religion: Oroqen believe in Shamanism which advocates the nature and animist.
Clothing Character: Clothing of Oroqen features with hunting. In order to get with the cold weather, they often make clothing and hat with carpreolus skin, decorated with pattern of cloud, antler, bow and arrow. Capreolus tendon is rub into fine thread to sew clothing.
Food Culture: In the past, their made raw meat as their staple food, supplemented by fish and wild vegetables. Later, rice and flour were introduced. Meat hand, roast meat, jerky, raw liver and kidney of roe deer are their favorite. Plum porridge is a sort of specialty of Oroqen nationality. Their favored drink is schisandra soup and birch juice.
Festival: Spring Festival is a happy event for Oroqen to celebrating the hunting harvest, to ring out the Old Year and ring in the New Year.
Bonfire festival (篝火节) is Oroqen’s own festival, held on 18th , June. On the day, Oroqen light the bonfire, sing and dance.
Custom: The funeral of Oroqen is divided into three styles: wind burial (also named tree burial), inhumation and cremation. Pregnant woman and younger suffered from acute disease are buried with cremation.
The traditional marriage of Oroqen is monopolized by parents, carrying out the monogamy.
Art: Oroqen women are skilled in embroidery. They embroider patterns of flower, bird, fish, insect and other small animals from hat on the heat to shoes on the feet. They are also good at fabricating daily necessities and handicrafts with birch-bark.
They cut birch-bark and animal skin into image of figures and animals, serving as children’s tool.
Carving is one part of Oroqen’s handicraft art, applying in religious articles.
