Description: Mongolian nationality (蒙古族) is one of ethnic minorities in China, a traditional nomadic nationality mainly distributing in Eastern Asia. Mongols dwelled on the grassland and lived on raising livestock for generations.
It was also called a nationality on the horse back. “Mongolia” refers to permanent fire, arising in Tang Dynasty at the earliest. According to the 6th census in 2010, the population of Mongolian nationality amounted to 6,500,000, mostly distributing in Inner Mongolia and Northeast China.

Religion: Shamanism is the primary religion of Mongolian nationality, which worshiped natural gods and ancestral spirits. Shamanism greatly impacted the Mongolian noble and folk and occupied a dominant position in Mongolian society until Yuan Dynasty. In the second half of 16th century, Tibetan Buddhism was introduced in Mongolian region.
Clothes Character: Mongolian clothes also called Mongolian robe, making up of long gown, belt, boots, jewelry, and so on. Style is diverse on the basis of different region. Bright color is favored by Mongols. Men’s clothing are mostly blue or brown, while women’s clothing are red, pink, blue and green. Mongolian people are used to wearing jewelry and hat.
Food Culture: Mongol takes three meals a day and milk and meat are necessary. Local food include roasted lamb, hand-served mutton, roast lamb leg, ,Mongolian pie, panner, deep fried pudding and milk tea. Since ancient times, koumiss was regarded as precious drink to serve customs. It functions in dispelling cold, promoting blood flow, kidneying reinforcing, invigorating the stomach and spleen.
Festivals: Genghis Khan Memorial Day-Genghis Khan is the notable Mongolian leader, outstanding militarist and politician. He uniformed the Mongolian tribes and established Mongolian Khanate. On the 17th, the March Lunar Month, numerous Mongols gather in front of Genghis Khan Tomb to pay homage to their great leader.
Nadamu- Nadamu is a five-day distinguished gathering of Mongols, held on the 4th, the April Lunar Month. The content includes traditional items such as wrestling, horse racing, archery, playing Mongolian chess and sports events containing track and field, tug-of-war, basketball and so on.
Aobao Festival- Aobao festival is traditional and time-honored, held from May to July to worship the nature. Mongols gather together, dancing and singing, taking koumiss and roast mutton.
Customs: Mongols avoid riding fast when approaching a yurt, so as not to disturb animals. If there are firemound or red cloth in front of door, it means there are patient or maternity. Outsiders are not allowed to enter. Guests could not take a seat on western kang, where was used to worship the god.
Music: Matouqin is a kind of stringed instrument of the Mongolian nationality with a scroll carved like a horse’s head.
