If you&#8217;d like to have\u00a0a weekend hike on a wide and overgrown section of the Great Wall around Beijing, Baiyangyu Great Wall is highly recommended.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This section of the Wall is located about 250km northeast of Beijing. It is under the administration of Dacuizhuang Town of Qian&#8217;an County in Tangshan City, Hebei Province.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23571\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23571\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23571\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/the_wall_east_of_beijing_to_the_sea-1-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/the_wall_east_of_beijing_to_the_sea-1-1-1.jpg 520w, https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/the_wall_east_of_beijing_to_the_sea-1-1-1-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23571\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baiyangyu Great Wall on the Great Wall east of Beijing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">&#8220;Baiyangyu&#8221; literally means &#8220;White Sheep Valley&#8221;. A river called Baiyang River passes the valley from north to south. There used to be a grand water pass of the Great Wall bridging the valley which now still divides the Baiyangyu Great Wall into two sections &#8211; East and West.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The two sections of Bauyangyu Great wall\u00a0are a\u00a04552m-long fairly well preserved wall with 21 guide-towers. Baiyangyu Great Wall was originally built in\u00a0Northen Qi Dynasty (550-577) and reinforced in Ming Dynasty (1368 &#8211; 1644) by the builders and army led by Qi Juguang.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Baiyangyu Great Wall has some unique features different from other sections of the Wall. Firstly, its water pass town had a double water wall &#8211; upper part and lower part,\u00a0constituting a\u00a0solid water town which was easy\u00a0for self-defense\u00a0and attacking\u00a0invaders as well, part of the military defense system in Baiyangyu Great wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Second, the east section of the Wall has a 1.5km unique marble wall, 10km high and 5m wide, rarely seen among other sections of the wall. Third, among other towers,\u00a0\u00a0Shenwei Tower (Powerful Tower) on the west section of Biayangyu Great Wall\u00a0is the most remarkable. Unlike\u00a0other watch-towers sitting on the wall,\u00a0it was constructed\u00a0to the outer side of the wall.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">If you walk eastward from Baiyangyu Great Wall, you will reach <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/great-wall-of-china\/xuliukou-great-wall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xuliukou Great Wall<\/a><\/span> and on to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/travel_blog\/beijing_china_sightseeing\/shanhaiguan_trip.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shanhaiguan Pass<\/a><\/span> meeting the ocean; walking westward, you get to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/great_wall\/badaling.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Badaling Great Wall<\/a><\/span> around Beijing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Of course, again we don&#8217;t have time nor strong legs to hike from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/great-wall-of-china\/xuliukou-great-wall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xuliukou Great Wall<\/a><\/span> to Baiyangyu Great Wall, we rely on our royal Buick van going from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/great-wall-of-china\/xuliukou-great-wall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xuliukou Great Wall<\/a><\/span> to Baiyangyu Valley. On weekends, middle class urban residents come here for a pleasant escape from polluted and noisy cities, drinking, climbing, outdoor activities and eating organic food prepared by the local farmers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now we turn off the New Sanwu Road and drive towards the entrance to Baiyangyu Scenic Area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9023\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9023\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/great-wall-of-china\/baiyangyu-great-wall\/attachment\/drive-towards-the-entrance-to-baiyangyu-scenic-area\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9023\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9023\" title=\"drive towards the entrance to Baiyangyu Scenic Area\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/drive-towards-the-entrance-to-Baiyangyu-Scenic-Area.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/drive-towards-the-entrance-to-Baiyangyu-Scenic-Area.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/drive-towards-the-entrance-to-Baiyangyu-Scenic-Area-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">drive towards the entrance to Baiyangyu Scenic Area<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">We enter the valley flanked by farm restaurants and inns with the two sections of the Wall looming overhead and Baiyang River passing from north to south, a picturesque view, but unfortunately it is still early spring, not much green nor blooming around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recommended by Mr. Zhang, the Great Wall protection warden at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/great-wall-of-china\/chengziyu-great-wall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chengziyu Great Wall<\/a><\/span>, we park our van on the parking lot in front of Mr.Yu Haiwen&#8217;s\u00a0farm house . He is the only local great wall protection warden at Baiyangyu Great Wall.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9024\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9024\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a first fort is ahead of us, dilapidated, sitting on the broken wall built of\u00a0hoary rocks and its tower base made of slabs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hiking along the mountain path by the slab built wall, we are heading towards to the second fort.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_9030\" Verdana;\">Now we are on the crumbling wall and look at the second watch tower and a wire fence is fixed nearby keeping rubble from falling down the mountain. <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure walk along the dilapidated wall to the so called &#8220;Wild City&#8221;, which looks like a castle surrounded by the wall on its four sides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">I turn right and look down, just have a clear view of the valley with the village and the river in the middle.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9033\"
