We travel on a charted coach with over 20 people on board for the fam road trip to Gannan Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, which is in the south of Gansu Province. Gannan literally means &#8220;the south of Gansu Province&#8221;. The main reason for visiting Xiahe is to see <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/how-to-visit-labrang-monastery\/\">Labrang Monastery<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The whole drive distance from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/lanzhou-trip-my-trip-to-lanzhou\/\">Lanzhou <\/a>to Xiahe County is 258 km. In between, we pass by Hezheng County and the city of Lingxia ( the capital city of Lingxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture). The road condition is much better than we expect. <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/lanzhou-xiahe-road-lanzhou-xiahe-labrang-monastery-bus\/\"> Lanzhou Xiahe 258 km road trip<\/a><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/lanzhou-xiahe-road-lanzhou-xiahe-labrang-monastery-bus\/\"> <\/a>gives us deep impression in terms of both different landforms and cultures unfolded to us on the road. We first drive along the Lanzhou Lingxia expressway\u00a0via Hezheng County at the distance of 140km. Then we drive along the National Highway 223 from Lingxia to Xiahe for about 118km. <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">We go through\u00a0the loess plateau and slowly\u00a0come\u00a0close to the fringe of Tibet-Qinghai Plateau. It is centrally located in the eastern section of Xiahe County. The famous <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/how-to-visit-labrang-monastery\/\">Labrang Monastery<\/a><\/span> is only one km west of the hotel. If you take a taxi from the hotel to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/how-to-visit-labrang-monastery\/\">Labrang Monastery<\/a><\/span>, it only costs you one Yuan.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/where-to-stay-in-xiahe\/\">Labuleng Civil Aviation Hotel<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is the best hotel in Xiahe County. This hotel is built according to a 4 star hotel standard with over 260 rooms including standard rooms, business rooms and luxury rooms.\u00a0 It is elegantly furnished and equipped with air-conditioning, TV and broad band internet. It has 2 small meeting rooms, one large conference room holding over 150 people as well Chinese and Western resturants and shopping center.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">In Xiahe, beside Labuleng Civil Aviation Hotel, there\u00a0are\u00a0more good choices of\u00a0hotels like Wangfu Hotel and Labrang Hotel. Wangfu Hotel is\u00a0another 3 star\u00a0Tibetan style\u00a0hotel in Xiahe, just next to Labuleng Civil Aviation Hotel. Labrang Hotel is located in the western section of Xianhe County, a Tibetan living area. Sangke Grassland was locates 14km southwest of the downtown area of Xiahe. <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Sangke Grasslands are a great expanse of pastures where Tibetans graze their yak herds. it was a pity that we didn&#8217;t have time coming here in the daytime to enjoy the lush green grassland and ride on horses. it was said that in summer Sangke Grasslands are at their best, green and abound with wildflowers. <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The sponsor did something to compensate us by organizing a small bonfire party. It has\u00a018 ethnic groups incluuding Tibetan, Han, Hui, Salar, Dongxiang, and Mongolian. It has a population of over 85,000 with Tibetans making up 81.17%.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The dowtown area of Xiahe County is sandwiched by the mountains in the north and south with Daxia River running through the town from west to east. Daxia River meets Tao River and empties into the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Yellow River<\/span>. The name of &#8220;Xiahe&#8221; is taken from the Daxia\u00a0River passing by the county.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Next morning I got up early for a field\u00a0inspection around the town. Actually Xiahe town is sectioned into three parts: east part mostly\u00a0inhabited by Han people; the middle part is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/how-to-visit-labrang-monastery\/\">Labrang Monastery<\/a><\/span>; and the west part is the living area of Tibetans. The east part is the most commercial area with lots of hotels, stores and restaurants as well as the local government office buildings. The Xiahe County Government is next to our lodging hotel in Xiahe &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/china-travel\/where-to-stay-in-xiahe\/\">Labuleng Civil Aviation Hotel<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The so called down town area of Xiahe County is composed of only two streets running from east to west &#8211; People &#8216;s Road\u00a0 and Sangqu Nublam Road with the Daxia River running in between. This most important Tibetan monastery outside <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/tibet_travel\/\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Tibet<\/span><\/a> was first founded by Ngagong Tsunde, the first generation of Jamyang from nearby Ganjia in 1709.\u00a0it is\u00a0an important monastery of the Gelukpa or the Yellow Hat Sect.\u00a0At its peak there were over 4000 monks.
