What Zhangye Road is to Lanzhou is similar to what Wangfujing Street<\/a><\/span> to Beijing. It is a famous pedestrian street in Lanzhou. This commercial road has a long history with rich cultural heritage\u00a0dating back to Song Dynasty ( 960-1276 ). <\/span>It was the main avenue in the ancient walled city during the reign of Song Dynasty.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Ming Dynasty ( 1368 -1644 ), this road was the only east west avenue with many buildings set up including Town God’Temple, Dongyue Taoist Temple, Donghua Taoist Temple and Zhuangye Buddhist Temple etc.<\/p>\n

In Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911), with the increase of Lanzhou’s economic and political position, especially considering the military stronghold along Hexi Corridor, Lanzhou became an important place to collect, store and transfer food and straw.<\/p>\n

A great number of offices, buildings and factories of both private and government owned were constructed on the both sides of the road.<\/p>\n

In May, 1958, this road was named “Zhangye Road” after the famous ancient city along the Hexi Corridor – “Zhangye” where the world famous Bronze Galloping Treading an Flying\u00a0Swallow was discovered. In 2006, Zhangye Road was designated as the pedestrian street in Lanzhou.<\/p>\n

Lanzhou Zhangye Road Pedestrian Street is rife with stores and restaurants. You are advised to walk from its east end and walk toward its west end. in the middle of the road, on your right side (north), the ancient gateway of Town God’s Temple will attract your attention, and the temple houses the largest Lanzhou Antique Market<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

At the west end of Zhengye Road, you will see the high and slender towers of the largest mosque in Lanzhou – Xiguan Mosque,<\/a><\/span> also known as West Cross Mosque<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Zhangye Road’s east end starts with the Gansu Government Provincial building.<\/span><\/p>\n
