The Great Wall of China is not a continuous wall. The wall exists in bits. These bits don&#8217;t form a continuous line.\u00a0Most of\u00a0the bits of the remaining Wall have their own names. Usually their names are given with regard to their geographic location, historical factors or the\u00a0necessity of the local tourism promotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Yunmengshan Great Wall is such named because it is located to the east of Mt. Yunmeng ( Yunmengshan Mountain ). Yunmengshan literally means &#8220;a mountain always covered by mist&#8221;. Yunmengshan is locally referred as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/huangshan_tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #2200c1;\">Huangshan<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>of North China&#8221; due to its stunning view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Yunmengshan Great Wall is a small bit of the Wall around Beijing. It was built\u00a0under the General Qi Jiguang during the Ming Dynaty (1368 -1644). To its west, is\u00a0located <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/travel_blog\/great_wall_hiking\/mutianyu_great_wall.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Mutianyu Great Wall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">, to its east <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/29\/gubeikou-jinshanling-great-wall-hike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; color: #0000ff;\">Gubeikou Great Wall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0 and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/travel_blog\/great_wall_hiking\/hike_from_jinshanling_great_wall_to_simatai_great_wall.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Jinshanling Great Wall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">It takes you 1 and half hours by car from your downtown hotel in Beijing<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0to the Yunmengshan Great Wall Relic Park, which lies about 90km northeast of Beijing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">There still exists 3 forts (watch towers) and one beacon tower on the Yunmengshan Great Wall with the beacon tower on the top of the mountain, the final destination of the hiking trip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">To reach the beacon tower on the top, we have to clamber up, passing the 3 forts\u00a0all the way. The first tower is called &#8220;Three Side Building&#8221; (altitude: 334m); the second tower &#8220;the General&#8221;s Tower&#8221; (altitude: 402.4m); third tower &#8220;Square Building&#8221;(altitude:504m) and\u00a0the final\u00a0beacon tower has the sea-level of 679.3 meters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Normally it takes approx. 2 and half hours hiking to the top beacon tower. For most of the time we have to walk along the paved stone step\u00a0path or\u00a0a well-trodden walking path paralleling the Wall because Yunmengshan Great Wall is\u00a0too wild, original and treacherous for you to walk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition, most part of the Wall were built on the steep cliff. The most important is all the wild sections of the Wall around Beijing are protected and forbidden for hiking.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">One big difference between Yunmenshan Great Wall and other formal and standard bits of the Wall like\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/travel_blog\/great_wall_hiking\/badaling_great_wall.php\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Badaling Great Wall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/travel_blog\/great_wall_hiking\/mutianyu_great_wall.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Mutianyu Great Wall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0is the making of the Wall itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yunmengshan Great Wall is made of rocks and stones used from the local mountains while\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/travel_blog\/great_wall_hiking\/badaling_great_wall.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Badaling Great Wall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/travel_blog\/great_wall_hiking\/mutianyu_great_wall.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Mutianyu Great Wall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0are made of the bricks used from the official kilns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">If you are not used to hiking, you can walk to the second tower (\u00a0The General&#8217;s Tower ), then turn back. If you are physically fit for the whole trip hiking up to the beacon tower on the top,\u00a0 you are encouraged to trudge up to the round beacon tower since the view\u00a0west of the\u00a0signal tower is stunning &#8211; the steep Yunmengshan Ravine behind it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Well, now follow us clambering up. There are three paths\u00a0leading\u00a0from the entrance\u00a0to the Great Wall &#8211; left, middle and right. The first tower is 334m at sea level. The two towers are 450m apart.<\/span><\/span>It is very dangerous walking on the wall.<\/p>\n<p>The surface of the wall is overgrown with bushes and saplings. In Ming Dynasty, each tower held 50 soldiers with a captain to in charge. Every 5 tower had a major and 10 towers had a general in charge.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This tower is square, 10 meters long and high.It has two arrow windows on north and south, three arrow windows on east and west. This is the most difficult part of the hiking on the trip. It takes approx. 1 and 30 minutes hiking.<\/span><\/span>This section of the Wall is only one fifth walkable on the wall starting from the second tower.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">From the second tower to the third tower, for the most of the time, we have to walk on the path by the Wall. It is about 350 meters from the third tower.
