Changyucheng Village is named after\u00a0one of the famous military\u00a0city circling an important\u00a0pass of the Great Wall called “Changyucheng”, which literally means “\u957f\u5cea\u57ce – Long Valley City”. Bordering Hebei Province, Changyucheng Great Wall boasts to have one of Beijing’s highest Great Wall towers at the sea-level of 1400 meters\u00a0with\u00a0stunning views.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ancient Changyucheng military\u00a0walled city\u00a0was set up 500 years ago in Ming Dynasty to\u00a0accommodate the garrison manning the pass as well the nearby sections of the Great Wall. If the\u00a0soldiers stationed on the Great Wall on the high mountain\u00a0spotted invaders, the main troops in the pass city would\u00a0be dispatched\u00a0there to man the defenses.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Changyucheng Village is\u00a0located in Changping District, approxi.100km northwest of\u00a0the city center of Beijing.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

On Feb 13, 2011, with my co-worker, Xiao Hao,\u00a0we explored the ancient village Changyucheng and hiked\u00a0the Great Wall near the village despite of the snowfall\uff0ca frist stop on our 5-day Great Wall tour<\/a>. We write the following travel tips for you to plan your own excursion to Changyucheng.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beijing Downtown – Changyucheng Village Driving Route
\n<\/span><\/strong>Drive along Jingzuang Highway G6, the same highway to Changping District,\u00a0<\/span>Juyongguan Great Wall<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0and <\/span>Badaling Great Wall<\/span><\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0We got off at Chenzhuang (Nankou) Exit 36 which is between the center of Changping District\u00a0and Juyongguan Great Wall.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, getting off Jingzuang Highway at Chenzhuang (Nankou) Exit 36 \u9648\u5e84(\u5357\u53e3)36\u51fa\u53e3, follow your nose north, then turn left at the Chenzhuang Bridge (\u9648\u5e84\u6865). Crossing under the bridge, then immediately turn right (north)\u00a0and drive along the provincial road till you come across a fork \u2013 Dongdajie Lukou of Nankou Town (\u5357\u53e3\u9547\u4e1c\u5927\u8857\u8def\u53e3), then you turn left (southwest ) on\u00a0Nanyan\u00a0Road(\u5357\u96c1\u8def).<\/p>\n

Continue to drive along Nanyan Road (\u5357\u96c1\u8def), passing Liucun Town (\u6d41\u6751\u9547), Mapaoquan Village (\u9a6c\u5228\u6cc9\u6751), then turn north and get to Changyucheng Village (\u957f\u5cea\u57ce\u6751)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Exploring\u00a0Changyucheng Village<\/strong>
\n<\/span>The village has a long history dating back to the Ming Dynasty 500 years ago. Its former military pass town was one of three most famous border passes of the Great Wall around Beijing with ancient military importance.<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n

The ancient city wall in front of the village, embrasures and the defense inner town are still visible. The old gate is still there. On the west of the village and on the high platform, there is the Yongxing Temple with a history of over hundreds\u00a0of years.\u00a0In addition to\u00a0Yongxing Temple. If you are lucky, you can enjoy local farmers singing and dancing.<\/span><\/div>\n

The hiking trail from the village to the\u00a0round Stone\u00a0Mound on the top of the mountain<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

1. At the foot of the Mountain
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Walking north from Changyucheng Village for 1.5km, and reach the foot of the mountain, where we start to climb up.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

2. Little reservoir<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hiking up, not far, in the middle of the hill, you will see\u00a0a small reservoir. The reservoir is as large as a school playground with its headwater coming from the mountain. So the view here is stunning with water passing through the forest. Some travelers just stop here BBQ, picnic and fishing. But at the time of our hiking, the reservoir is frozen with different views from other seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.\u00a0A small forest<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

North of the reservoir, there is a small forest with tall trees. In summer, they offer good shade.<\/span><\/div>\n

4. Jungle Corridor
\n<\/strong>Walking further up, you will pass under the “Jungle Corridor”. It is an informal name given to the road northeast of the boundary stone table.<\/p>\n

It is a passage through the forest with trees high up and dirt road on our feet as if you are walking in an enclosed corridor, hence “Jungle Corridor”. The mountain atmosphere here is quite strong with good environment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

5.\u00a0Stone Step\u00a0Road
\n<\/strong>From the Jungle Corridor, \u00a0you walk up along the stone step road paved by the local villagers. With you hiking higher up, the trees over your head\u00a0are disappeared. Then you reach the meadow.<\/p>\n

Before you reach the meadow, you have the most difficulty part of the hike, the most energy consuming. Most travelers will be feel dog-tired and panting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Soon,\u00a0you are on\u00a0a mountain range, green meadow (winter yellow, now it is white due to snow)\u00a0open and flat, a good place to take a break and fresh up. From the meadow, you can see the high round stone mound on\u00a0a mountain top.<\/span><\/div>\n

7. The <\/strong>boundary stone table<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
From the meadow, walk up a few steps, you are on a big and open platform. On the platform, there is a boundary stone table – West is Hebei and southeast is Beijing.<\/span><\/div>\n

8. The Round Stone Mound on the mountain top<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

From the meadow or the big platform, you can see a round stone Mound on the mountain top. Hiking from the stone table up to the high stone mound, you can see the Great Wall snaking on the mountain range.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The watch tower is said to be the highest elevation of the watch towers in Beijing. The second tower is round, which is one of the five round watch towers in Beijing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

9. Highest Watch\u00a0Tower ( Great Wall )<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

So if you are still energetic, you\u00a0may walk extra half hour and reach the\u00a0\u00a0watch tower on your right side, locally known as “high-rise.” with\u00a0the altitude about 1,400 meters. The Great Wall here\u00a0extends in a shape of “V”,\u00a0to the northeast leading to Badaling Great Wall and northwest to Hebei Province.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the northwest of the Great Wall,\u00a0for the second watch tower with a round\u00a0base, is said to be one of the five circular watch towers in Beijing, locally called “the Round Building”.<\/p>\n

If good visibility, you can have have a panorama view of the Quanting reservoir in daytime and overlook\u00a0the colorfully\u00a0lit city of Beijing in the evening. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The whole hiking takes approx. 4 hours, extra hour needed if you walk to the highest watch tower, locally known as “high-rise tower”.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
