{"id":19164,"date":"2021-09-26T10:10:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-26T02:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/?p=19164"},"modified":"2021-09-26T23:04:03","modified_gmt":"2021-09-26T15:04:03","slug":"drive-from-litang-to-batang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/sichuan-travel\/litang\/drive-from-litang-to-batang","title":{"rendered":"Drive from Litang to Batang (Tips, Photos &#038; Map)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give up Yading temporarily due to the unsual weather<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today is 11 October, and last night we arrived at Daocheng (\u7a3b\u57ce) safe and sound, but in&nbsp;pretty&nbsp;low spirits, seeing through the hotel room windows it was snowing outside, wet and chilly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While dining at the canteen in our lodging hotel, one of the staff members told us that there had been a fairly&nbsp;big snow the day before and there would be more snow in the coming days. And this year&#8217;s weather&nbsp;was rather unusual, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the suggestion of his wife, Mr. Chen said that he would like to&nbsp;adjust our original plan, considering to postpone our visit of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/sichuan-travel\/yading-brings-you-inner-peace\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/sichuan-travel\/yading-brings-you-inner-peace\" target=\"_blank\">Yading Nature Reserve<\/a> (\u4e9a\u4e01\u98ce\u666f\u533a)&nbsp;till 15 October (Thursday). The weatherman says that&nbsp;it is going to snow&nbsp;on&nbsp;all the coming three&nbsp;consecutive days which will make it difficult to hike the trails in Yading and enjoy the otherwise multi-colored mountains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, we do have a general travel plan for our 20 some days self-drive trip. But we are not the sort of an overplanner who applies excessive schedule pressure. We are open to any ideas that would maximize our time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Daocheng Loop Road Trip ( 1272km)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our final decision is to leave Daocheng today and go back to Litang ( 148 km&nbsp;\u7406\u5858)&nbsp;instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/sichuan-travel\/yading-brings-you-inner-peace\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/sichuan-travel\/yading-brings-you-inner-peace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yading<\/a> ( \u4e9a\u4e01); from Litang, we drive west along&nbsp;the National Highway G318 to Batang ( 177 km&nbsp;\u5df4\u5858),&nbsp;Zhubalongxiang&nbsp;(35 km \u7af9\u5df4\u7b3c), Mangkang in&nbsp;Tibet&nbsp;(75 km&nbsp;\u8292\u5eb7); then get off the National Highway No.318 at Mangkang and turn south along the National Highway No.214 and get to our today&#8217; last&nbsp;destination &#8211; Feilaisi at Deqin&nbsp;(216 km&nbsp;&nbsp;\u5fb7\u94a6\u98de\u6765\u5bfa), a total driving length of 651 km for today.&nbsp; In Feilaisi, we are scheduled to stay overnight and see Kawa Garbo Peak, or Kawagebo Peak (\u5361\u74e6\u683c\u535a\u5cf0) if luck follows us tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"395\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Daocheng-loop-road-trip.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27762\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Daocheng-loop-road-trip.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Daocheng-loop-road-trip-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><figcaption>Doacheng Loop Road Trip (Google Map)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we plan to go further south along the National Highway No.214 and get&nbsp;to Shangri-la (200 km&nbsp;)&nbsp;where we are going to stay for two nights. After Shangri-la,&nbsp; we will return to&nbsp;Daocheng ( 421 km \u7a3b\u57ce) via Xiangcheng (\u4e61\u57ce)&nbsp;on 14 October and visit Yading Nature Reserve on 15 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a loop trip with a total length of 1132 km from Daocheng and back to Daocheng. It is our first time to travel on the overland loop like this.&nbsp;We like to have our self-drive to to be the sort of off the cuff and we three are all delighted with our adjusted loop travel plan. Self-drive gives us much flexibility&nbsp;though we understand driving is stressful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Daochgeng to Batang County Road Trip ( Part of the Loop)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At 8:30 am, 11 October, we leave the downtown of Daocheng (\u7a3b\u57ce). Daocheng is located at an altitude of 3700 meters. There seems not much to do in the town. It does offer a good stepping stone for coming either from Litang or Shangri-la in Yunnan and continuing their trip to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/sichuan-travel\/yading-brings-you-inner-peace\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/sichuan-travel\/yading-brings-you-inner-peace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Yading Nature Reserve<\/a>. We don&#8217;t stop on route due to the tight schedule&nbsp;with&nbsp;a bucolic panorama fleeting by&nbsp;from both sides our vehicle&nbsp;of rolling hills, grazing&nbsp;yaks&nbsp;and Tibetan houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We get back to Litang Town around 11:30 am and take a picture of its&nbsp;West Gate, a huge symbolic west entrance to Litang Town, known as &#8220;World High Town&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-19168\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Litang-West-Gate.jpg\" alt=\"Litang West Gate\" class=\"wp-image-19168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Litang-West-Gate.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Litang-West-Gate-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><figcaption>Litang West Gate<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Litang to Batong Road Trip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At Litang, we again get onto the National Highway G318 and turn west for our 170 km overland trip to Batang (\u5df4\u5858).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-19175\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"590\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Litang-to-Batong.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Litang-to-Batong.jpg 590w, https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Litang-to-Batong-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><figcaption>Drive from Litang to Batang along G318<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Batang is the county in the west of&nbsp;Ganzi Tibet Autonomous Prefecture with its seat at Xiaqiong Town (\u590f\u909b\u9547). It borders with Mangkang&nbsp;(\u8292\u5eb7) in Tibet on the west with their border line following the north-south Jinsha River (\u91d1\u6c99\u6c5f).&nbsp; The road condition looks good, a wide and flat asphalt road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-19169\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/G318-from-Litang-to-Batang.jpg\" alt=\"G318 from Litang to Batang\" class=\"wp-image-19169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/G318-from-Litang-to-Batang.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/G318-from-Litang-to-Batang-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><figcaption>Highway G318 from Litang to Batang<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Passing through Maoya Grassland (\u6bdb\u57ad\u5927\u8349\u539f)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a sightseeing drive from Litang to Batang.&nbsp;About 30 km out of Litang Town, we soon see the well-known Maoya Grassland (\u6bdb\u57ad\u5927\u8349\u539f),&nbsp;golden color in autumn&nbsp;unfurled&nbsp;before us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tableland plains are hemmed in by the high mountains in four sides with a fall of over 1000 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-19171\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Maoya-Grassland.jpg\" alt=\" Maoya Grassland \" class=\"wp-image-19171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Maoya-Grassland.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Maoya-Grassland-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><figcaption>Maoya Grassland<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Maoya Grassland is fed by the surrounding snow-capped mountains, though not as big as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/inner-mongolia-travel\/how-to-visit-hulunbuir-grassland\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/inner-mongolia-travel\/how-to-visit-hulunbuir-grassland\" target=\"_blank\">Hulunbuir Grassland<\/a> and Xilingol grassland in Inner Mongolia, it has a unique dimensional beauty of being connected to green mountains, high snow-shrouded peaks, white clouds and azure sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-19172\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Maoya-Grassland-is-fed-by-the-surrounding-snow-capped-mountains.jpg\" alt=\"Maoya Grassland is fed by the surrounding snow-capped mountains\" class=\"wp-image-19172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Maoya-Grassland-is-fed-by-the-surrounding-snow-capped-mountains.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Maoya-Grassland-is-fed-by-the-surrounding-snow-capped-mountains-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><figcaption>Maoya Grassland is fed by the surrounding snow-capped mountains<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Going over Haizi Mountain Pass 4500m<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the west end of Maoya Grassland,&nbsp; we find ourselves driving upwards, knowing we are approaching Haizi Mountain (\u6d77\u5b50\u5c71) with average elevation of 4500 meters. &#8220;Haizi&#8221; literally means&#8221;lakes&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is said that there are totally 1145 lakes in Haizi Mountain and its density of lakes is very much unique in China. When we are driving through Haizi Mountain, it is snowing with all the mountain areas on the top&nbsp;blanketed by white snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-19173\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Haizi-Mountain-Pass.jpg\" alt=\"Haizi Mountain Pass\" class=\"wp-image-19173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Haizi-Mountain-Pass.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Haizi-Mountain-Pass-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><figcaption>Haizi Mountain Pass at 4685 meters<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Haizi Mountain Nature Reserve is a Sichuan provincial level reserve. The reserve has a lunar landscape without any trees and lakes, and even little bushes and wild grasses. All kinds of gravels and rocks and lakes are only what you can see here, the largest ancient ice relic on Qinghai-Tibet Plateaua, known as &#8220;Daocheng Ancient Ice Cap&#8221; \u7a3b\u57ce\u6d77\u5b50\u5c71\u53e4\u51b0\u5e3d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Viewing the Haizi Mountain Sister Lakes  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Going over Haizi Mountain Pass, we get to a viewing platform on the left side of the National Highway G318,&nbsp; a good place to stop to grab a bite for our lunch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To our pleasant surprise, below the platform and in a distant, there are two&nbsp;mirror-like lakes known as&nbsp;the Haizi Mountain Sister Lakes (\u6d77\u5b50\u5c71\u59ca\u59b9\u6e56) according to the roadside signboard. The two lakes sitting side by side, blue and limpid,&nbsp;are fed by the snow mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-19174\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Haizi-Mountain-Sister-Lakes.jpg\" alt=\"Haizi Mountain Sister Lakes \" class=\"wp-image-19174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Haizi-Mountain-Sister-Lakes.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.tour-beijing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Haizi-Mountain-Sister-Lakes-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><figcaption>Haizi Mountain Sister Lakes<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Batong and its seat &#8211; Xiaqiqong Town (Xiaqiongzhen)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Haizi Mountain Sister Lakes are located in the middle way between Litang and Batang. Batang Town is still about 81 km west from the&nbsp;viewing platform. Batang is the county in the west of&nbsp;Ganzi Tibet Autonomous Prefecture with its seat at Xiaqiong Town (\u590f\u909b\u9547).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We get to the gas&nbsp;station by G318 in&nbsp;Xiaqiong Town ( the downtown area of Batang County ) around 3:30 pm. After a brief break at the filling station, we again start up our trip along G318 west for our next destination &#8211; Mangkang in Tibet (\u8292\u5eb7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Any questions&nbsp;on
