Xiayang Town, Xiayang Town Yongding

 

Xiayang Town is one of the ten towns under the administration of Yongding County in Southwest Fujian Province. The local government of Xiayang Town administrates 20 villages with its seat at Xiayang Village.
 
Xiayang Town lies about 36km southest of Fengcheng Town where the Yongding Government is located. It is to the south of Qiling Township, nicknamed “the South Gate” of West Fujian. Xiayang Town is 116km north of Meizhou in Guangdong Province, so many Guangzdong travelers would drive through Meizhou to Xiayang to visit Chuxi Tulou Cluster instead of first going to Xiamen.

Rich Hot Spring Resources
Lying on the Jinfeng Stream area, Xiayang Town has rich water resources. Xiayang Town also has plentiful terrestrial heat with many hot springs dotted around the villages of Xiaxu, Taiping, Dongyang and Tangzi. Xiaxu Village, especially has the hottest hot spring as high as 70 degrees with PH 7-8. The hot spring industry is developing every fast. There are some hot spring resorts in the town. Currently Capital of Hakka Hot Spring Resort is the best hot spring resort in the town.

Important Hometown of Oversea Chinese
Xiayang Town has oversea Chines of 7,6000 from Taiwan, Macao, Hong Kong and other parts of the world. Over 5,600 households in the Town have relatives of oversea Chinese. There are also over 1000 returned oversea Chinese. Each year the money remitance from oversea Chinese accounts for the 60% of the total income of Xiayang County. Especially the ancient Zhongchuan Village was the cradle of the oversea Chinese.
 
There are many Hakka leaders both in Politics and in Business around the world who are from Zhongchuan Village of Xiayang Town. Aw Boon Par (1886 – 1944) Aw Boon Haw (1884 – 1954) were among the most famous overseas Chinese in 1930s and 40s. “That which is derived from society, should be returned to society” is Aw Boon Haw’s motto.

Tulou Cluster at Chuxi Village of Xiayang Town

Chuxi Tulou Cluster is situated on the hillside, 15km from the downtown of Xiayang Town, about 40km southeast of Yongding County and 230km southwest of Xiamen City. There are five circular Tulou buildings and over a dozen of rectangular in shape in Chuxi village. 
 
The Jiqinglou is typical of the Hakka earth buildings in Chuxi Tulou Cluster. Jiqinglou was built in 1419 during the reign of Emperor Yongle in Ming Dynasty. It stands on the south and faces the north.
