We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is the largest province in China with an area of 1.6 million square, one sixth of China in size, the size of France, Germany, Spain and the UK combined. Xinjiang has a popultion of over 21.8 million, Uigurs making up 45%, the rest composing of 47 ethnic groups such as Han 41%, Kazakh 7%, Hui 5%, Kyrgyz 0.9%, Mongol 0.8%, Dongxiang 0.3%, Pamiris 0.2% and the list could be much longer.

Xinjiang Travel Information


When to Visit
Basically the tour of Xinjiang is sectioned into fours parts: Northern Xinjjiang, Southern Xinjiang, West Tianshan and East Tianshan. Each part has its own characteristics:

1. Northern Xinjiang Route (North of Tian Shan Moountain)
Kanas Lake Natural Reserve Ecotourism. Kanas Lake is classified by UNESCO as "mankind's last piece of pure land. Not just Kanas Lake, you have more to see, to feel, to touch along the semicircle Northern Xinjiang route around the Junggar Basin touring Fuyun, Altay, Burjin, Kelamayi...
2. Southern Xinjiang Route (South of Tianshan Mountain)
Explore the ancient middle and south silk roads along the Tarim Basin betwenn Tianshan Mountains and Kunlun Mountains and experience the minority culture, custom in Southern Xinjing by visiting such ancient places - Korla, Luntai, Kuqa, Aksu, Artush, Kashgar, Tashkurgan, Yengisar, Yakand, Hotan, Minfeng, Quemo, Ruoqiang etc.
3. East Tianshan Route (East of Tianshan Mountain)
Experience the east ancient silk road - Turpan, Hami: Jiaohe Ruins, Gaochang Ruins, Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, Wubao Ancient Tombs, Lapuqiaoke Ancient City, Hui King Mausoleum and more.
4. West Tianshan Route (on the west and middle of Tianshan Mountain)
Get lost in the beauty of the pure and primitiveg grassland - Nalati Grassland and Buyanbulak Grassland; Travel Sarim Lake, Swan Lake and visiting the City of Bole and Yining.

The best time to visit Xinjiang is later May through June, September through October. Xinjiang's climate is one of the extremes. Winter (December to March) could be very cold. Spring (April and May) is not suitable for travel with possible dust and sandstorm.

An autumn trip to Kanas Lake is often sought after by photographers; A June through Auguest visit to Nalati Grassland and Buyanbulak Grassland is a great escape from hustle and bustle of city life; June, Auguest, September and October are the best time to explore the ancient middle and south silk roads along the Tarim Basin betwenn Tianshan Mountains and Kunlun Mountains and experience the east ancient silk road - Turpan, Hami.

Get There & Around
Xinjiang is well connected with domestic cities and central Asia by flight. The major airports in Xinjiang include Urumqi, Kashgar, Yining, Korla, Hotan and Kanas. Urumqi is the flight transportation hub linking Xinjiang to the outside world including central Asian countries.

Xinjiang is also easilly accessible by overland travel with many expessways or highways connecting domestic cities and bordering countries. The rail link is obviously the cheap and easy transportation heading back to mainland China through Gansu.

Traveling around Xinjiang by flight can save your time. Most of the flights go through Urumqi with the main airports in Hotan, Yining, Kashgar, Korla and Aksu. Now rail lines go from Urumqi to Yining, Kashgar, Korla and Hotan. Travel overland is the most popular travel mode to go around Xinjiang, which boasts many high-quality highways and expressways linking Northern Xinjiang and Southern Xinjiang.

1.Kanas Lake: The Kanas Lake (Kanasi Hu) means "beautiful, rich and mysterious" in Mongolian. The lake is nestled in the deep forests and mountains of Altay.
2.Nalati (Narat) Grassland: Narat Grassland is a typical river bed grassland and the alpine meadows. Narat Grassland is located at the sea-level of 1800 meters. It is inhabitated by Kazakh minority.
3.Tian Chi Lake: The lake is nestled high in the Tianshan Mountains, 120 kilometers west of Urumqi in Xinjiang.
4.Jiaohe Ruined City: The Jiaohe Ruins is the site of an ancient city found, 10 km west of the city of Turpan. It is loacted on an island between two rivers, hence the name of "Jiaohe", the confluence of two rivers.
5.Kashi (Kashgar): Kashgar is unquestionably the highlight of the Southern Xinjiang Trip! Kashgar is an important hub on the Old Silk Road, a vibrant Islamic centre within Chinese territory.
6.Kuche (Kuqa):Kuqa is located on the northern edge of the Tarism Basin, 280km west of Korla and 290km east of Aksu.
7.Kalakuli Lake (Karakol Lake): Located at the foot of Mushitage Glacier in the east of the Pamirs in Xinjiang.
8.Hetian (Hotan): Melikawat is the ruins of an ancient and enormous Buddhist monastery located about 28 km south of central Hotan. 
9.Yarkand (Shache): An oasis town set beside the Yarkand River at the western end of the Taklamakan desert i

Xinjiang Food
Xinjiang cuisine refers to the cooking styles of many ethnic groups in the Xinjiang region, which is mainly composed of Uyghur cuisine. The main ingredients include roast mutton, kebab, roast fish, and rice. The Xinjiang food is predominantly halal due to the Islamic population.

The signature dishes include Shou La Mian. a kind of handmade noodle, made from flour, water and salt. The noodles are boiled until very soft and then served topped with stir-fried meat, and vegetables in meat stock.

Other dishes include soups made of lamb or chicken, kebabs of lamb or beef; Bread is the Central Asian-style baked flatbread known as naan, using sesame seeds, butter, milk, vegetable oil, salt, and sugar.

Kebabs, seasoned with chili powder, salt, black pepper, and zire are eaten with the skewer. Another popular Xinjiang dish is dapanji, which is literally translated as "big plate chicken."

What to Buy
While traveling in Xinjiang, it is advisable to do shopping at the local bazaars whether you are doing serious shopping or just window shopping. Each city has its own unqiue bazzars. Urumqi: Erdaoqiao Market & International Bazzars; Kuqa: Bazzar & Mosque; Kashgar: Sunday markets, livestock market, old town;Hotan: Sunday Market, Carpet factory,Silk workshop;Burjin: Night market.

There are a larget selection of things you can choose from: carpets,rug, fur caps, musical instruments, kitschy souvenirs.
