We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Waterfalls in Xi'an

Summer is a lovely time to visit waterfalls in Xi’an, the capital city of Shaanxi Province. Breathe the fresh and reviving air from the cascade and you will forget the intolerable heat.

Hukou Waterfall

Located in Yichuan county in Yan’an, some 360 kilometers from Xi’an, the Hukou Waterfall is the second largest in China.

The Hukou Waterfall is located where the Yellow River flows through Jinxia Grand Canyon. When the mighty water flows near Longwang Mountain, the grand canyon suddenly narrows from 300 to 50 meters, transforming the quiet river into a turbulent one. The grand scene looks as if the water is pouring down from a huge teapot, hence the name Hukou (the mouth of a teapot). The tremendous mass of water creates ear-splitting explosive bursts.

Admission fee: 91 yuan ($14.4)

Transportation: Take the train or the long-distance bus from Xi’an to Yan’an, and take the minibus from Yan’an South Bus Station to Hukou Waterfall.

Gaoguan Waterfall

Located in Gaoguan Valley, in Qinling Mountain, 20 kilometers southeast in Huxian county in Xi’an, Gaoguan Waterfall is a must-see due to its breathtaking scenery. Near the waterfall, there is a peak similar to the shape of a giant wearing a high-crowned hat (Gaoguan in Chinese), hence the name of the waterfall.

The plunging water pours down from the 30-meter tall cliff, sending out a never-ending roar as it strikes the bottom. Early in the Qin (221BC-206BC) and Han (206BC-220AD) dynasties, it belonged to the Shanglin Parkland, the royal forest park where emperors entertained themselves. In the Tang (618-907) Dynasty, it was an important tourist destination in the suburbs of Chang’an city.

Major scenic spots in Gaoguan Waterfall also include the Meihua (plum blossom) Pool, Niubi (the nose of the bull) Cave, Mingtong Pavilion, Zhengde Plank Road, Guifeng Temple, Shuangfeng Mountain and Wuliang Cave.

Admission fee: 14 yuan ($2.2)

Transportation: Take the No.4-08, 921 buses or Huanshan Tourism Bus Line 1 and get off at Gaoguan Waterfall.

Jiulong (Nine-dragon) Pool Scenic Area

Located in Weiziping, in Chang’an district in Xi’an, at the northern foot of Qinling Mountain, the Jiulong (Nine-dragon) Pool Scenic Area is a newly-developed holiday spot boasting nine pools.

Lying against the Buddhist Holy Land of Guanyin Mountain, and facing the Taoist Mountain – Wanhua Mountain, Jiulong Pool Scenic Area is richly endowed by nature. The mountain torrent breaks down the glen with its rolling thunder, falling successively over a number of small cascades.

Admission fee: 25 yuan ($3.9)

Transportation (by bus): Take the No.320 bus and get off at Qinling Wildlife Park, and take the local minibus (7 yuan ($1.1)) to Jiulong Pool.

By car: Xi’an – Weiqu – University City (Weiguo Avenue) – Ziwu Avenue (turn right at the end of the avenue) – Huanshan Road – Qinling Wildlife Park – Fengyukou Crossing – go south for 13 kms – Jiulong Pool
