We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

My Yichang Chongqing Yangtze Cruise ( The Fifth Day )
( Fengdu Ghost City Excursion )

December 30, 2005
7:00:Breakfast
8:00-14:00: Sailing from Fengjie to Fengdu passing Wanzhou and Zhongxian
14:00-16:30 Shore Excursion: Fengdu (Ghost City)
18:00 Farewell Dinner

Today wa have a 274km cruise from Fengjie to the ghost city of Fengdu, passing Wanzhou and Zhongxian.

Wanzhou ( or Wanxian ) got its present name starting from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). The city is known as the Gateway to East Sichuan. It lies on the middle way between Yichang and Chongqing. Some Yangtze River cuises will arrange a side excursion to the silk-weaving factories, the Three Gorges Museum and take a shopping tour of busy local market. Visitors can find some of the city's free markets selling local products and seasonal delicacies such as mountain mushrooms or live eels. It was said there was once was a community of foreign missionaries in Sichuan before 1949. Two churches -one Catholic and one Protestant still stand there to attract many local people.

Zhongxian County is where Shibaozhai is located. It is a 12- story wooden pagoda set up against the side of a sheer rectangular cliff, a amazing structure. Shibaozhai literally means Stone Treasure Fortress. It lies in Zhongxian County on the south bank of the Yangtze River, 278 km away from Chongqing. It was first set up in Qing Dynasty in 1750. But unfortunately for this trip, we have no opportunity to view its true face. Instead, we go directly to Fengdu.

Fengdu lies on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, about 170km downstream from Chongqing. Fungdu is famous for its "Ghost City" well known in China. It is a must-shore excursion site on the Yangtze cruise. Fengdu got its fame as the "Ghost City" in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Fengdu's ghost culture has attracted a large number of tourists, which has topped more than 1 million a year.

We disembark at the shipside of Fengdu and climb over a few steps before we walk to the Ghost City of Fengdu. The local vendors are everywhere nudging you to buy their stuff.

Back to M.S. Century Sky and head to our destination - Chongqing. Tonight we stay docked at Chongqing. We have a farewell party. Tomorrow will leave our home on the Yangte River - M.S. Century Sky!
