Lhasa Tibet Travel Tips

Trip to Tibet is an most exotic journey which offers you the chance to visit ancient Buddhist monasteries, enjoy fantastic views of the highest mountains, to talk to nomadic Tibetan pilgrims, to walk on world's highest plateau etc.

To most people a trip to Tibet is a lifetime journey. Tibet was opened to public as a tourist city in 1985. The infrastructure of the tourism industry is in most cases very basic Though in 2006 the train to Lhasa is completed.

You are kindly suggested to notice that you don't expect the standard which you are accustomed to back home. Just accept this land as it is, enjoy its ancient spirit, come as friend with open arms and heart and you'll enjoy the trip and Tibet will linger with you forever in your mind.

Our tour company and second travel suppliers will make every effort under the actual circumstances to ensure your safe and memorable travel in Tibet.

Altitude sickness:
As you are walking over high land, it is possible for you to feele some of the minor symptoms and discomfort of altitude sickness like headache, loss of appetite etc until your body adjusts to the high terrain. Adjustment of your body to altitude can take from a few hours to some days. It all depends on an individual health condition. Please don't worry and take as uch water as possible. As you know, proper hydration is necessary for acclimatization. We also suggest you to take some diamox tablets.

Currency and Exchange Rate:
The unit of currency is Yuan ( RMB ). US$1 = 8 Yuan ( RMB ). Your money can be exchanged at the Bank of China in Shigatse and Lhasa. Your hotels also can change money for you. All credit cards are accepted at Shigatse and Lhasa.

Weather & Tourism Seasons in Tibet:
Generally, the Tibetan climate is not as bad as many people think it to be. It is suitable for travel to Tibet from April to November, and the best time for travellling is August and September. But if you only visit Lhasa , you can go there anytime all year round.

Sun radiation is extremely strong in Tibet. May, June and September are the tourism season in east Tibet. Most annual rainfall falls from June to September. Usually rains come in the evening in Lhasa, Shigatse area. Sometimes, the rainfall may block roads and make travel difficult but the views at the time will be the most beautiful.

Lhasa - Shigatse - Lhatse - Tingri - Nyalan : Its Friendship highway is in good shape all year around. But from December to February, the thawed road could cause some trouble. Try to skip over August - landslide may occure in the rainy season.

Mt. Everest Area : Early May and early October are the ideal time to visit Mt. Everest. Beacuse of the clear weather, you have the opportunity to see Mt. Everest's real look. From December to February, we suggest you should not go to this area because it is too cold.

Mt.Kailash : This area is already inhospitable and don't mention the bad climate conditions. Heavy rain and big snow could make the your trip worse. However, for those determined tourists, the ideal time is May, June, July, September and October.

Eastern Tibet : Please don't make any plan for travelling in this area in July or August ( the rainy season). The heavy rain could ruin the road, and make serious landslides.

Northern Tibet : Due to the average altitude of 4,500m, this area provides very limited time for tourists. Summer (July to August) is the best time to enjoy the great plain in northern Tibet.
