Pingyao Mt. Mian Shan
Mt. Mian Shan, about 20kms from city center is an amazing experience to visit, which is not thousands of years old but the site itself holds a history dating back to about 700BC. Back almost 3,000 years ago in the Spring and Autumn Period, the King Wengong of Jin was exiled. A loyal follower called Jie Zitui accompanied him for 19 years to protect him.
Years later King’s throne was restored, however, Jie Zitui lived in seclusion as a hermit to refuse the King’s guerdon. King wanted to repeat the offer in person, but the slopes of the mountain were nearly impossible to climb and Jie Zitui proved too hard to track. In order to force Jie Zitui out of his hiding, eventually the King ordered to burn the mountain to force Jie Zitui’s appearance.
The fires raged and tragically the charred bodies of Jie Zitui and his mother were later found in the mountain. The mortified King ordered an annual event to commemorate Jie - known nowadays as ingming Jie (Grave-Sweeping Festival), which is held every spring. Mianshan and Jie passed into folklore, and communities of Taoist and Buddhist monks subsequently built amazing temples that still perch on the impossibly craggy slopes.
Build in the past four years for a budget over over 2 billion yuan (over a quarter of a billion USD) Mian Shan mountain features a 20 kilometers long drive around the top of the mountain with countless of beautiful temples scattered around the steep walls. The views are breath-taking, and the temples have been built to a very high detail. Definitely a recommended place to visit in your Pingyao Tour.
