We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Gandan Temple

Gandan Temple(甘丹寺) is located in Lhasa Dazi territory, the south bank of Lhasa River. The full name of the temple is "Gan Danlangjielin" and it is one of the three major temples in Lhasa. Ganden is a Tibetan transliteration, meaning "Tushita." Gandan Temple is the most special one in the six Gelug Sect temples. It is a temple prepared to be built by Tsongkhapa personally, founder of the Gelug Sect in 1409. It is the ancestral temple of the Gelug sect where the Gelug Sect leader lived in the temple through the ages.

Ganden Temple is composed by more than 50 buildings, mainly composed by Cuochin hall, Tsongkhapa Sleeping Hall, Yangbajian School, Tsongkhapa stupa and sacrificial hall, Jiang Zizha Warehouse, Xiazi Zha Warehouse and 23 Kang villages, 20 Mi villages. In 23 Kang village, each one has an oratory house mostly of which are a two-story building, built along the mountain. Looking from afar, the oratory houses occupy the entire hillside.

There are many beautiful murals and sculptures in each hall of Ganden Monastery. Many treasured relics are stored in the temple. In 1757, the Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong gave the temple gold and silver-studded jewelry as a gift. Ming Emperor Yongle gave the temple 24 thangka as a gift, as well as the cushion of Gushi Khan. They are really rare treasures.

During August each year in Lhasa Shoton, the Gandan Temple will hold a grand sun Ganden Buddhist ceremony. Though the scale is not larger than that of Drepung Temple, it is also a grand one.
