Baoding One Day Excursion

![]() Baoding is an ancient city with a history of 1300 years, it was awarded one of the historical cultural city by the National Tourism Bureau in 1986. It's about 150 KM away from Beijing. Baoding has over 500 spots of cultural relics in total.15 of which are under the state level protection. Among them, the must-to see sites are the Western Qing Tombs(1730-1915), Zhili Provincial Governor's Office Museum (1730-1911)and Mancheng Han Tombs (154BC-113BC). Tour Itinerary : Leave from your hotel in Beijing at 7:30 and drive west of Beijing along the Jingshi Highway. It takes about two hours'drive to get to Baoding. First visit the the Western Qing Tombs, 4 of the 10 emperors in the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911) since they conquered central China in 1644 had their tombs built in the Western Qing Tombs. Five of them built their tombs in the Eastern one (120 km east of Beijing), the last emperor, Puyi, did not have his tomb built in neither of these two tombs. After lunch at a nice retaurant nearby, go on with the visit to Zhili Provincial Governor's Office, the only best preserved provincial office of the Qing Dynasty. Tne move on to Mancheng Han Dynasty Tombs which are located at half way up the hill 1.5 km west of Mancheng County, 25 km west of Baoding. There are over 10,000 articles excavated from these two tombs in total. Many of them are among the top category of the unearthed artifacts. The Western Qing Tombs The Western Qing Tombs are situated at Yixian County, Baoding City,120 km west of Beijing.(Hence the name Western Qing Tomb.).There were altogether 10 emperors in the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911) since they conquered central China in 1644. Four of them had their tombs built in the Western Qing Tombs, five of them built their tombs in the Eastern one (120 km east of Beijing). And the last emperor, Puyi, did not have his tomb built in neither of these two tombs.There are also 10 more tombs for the empresses, princes and princesses, altogether 76 royal family members were buried in this peaceful land. The Tai Tomb for Emperor Yongzheng is the first tomb in this area and largest. The Chong Tomb for Emperor Guangxu is the last tomb built in the Qing Dynasty, and his tomb is the only one whose underground palace is open to the public. Baoding Baoding used to be the capital of Zhili Province, an ancient name for Hebei Province from 1730 to 1911. This Governor's Office served as the governmental office of Hebei Province. Since 1988, this complex of buildings are changed into a museum.Zhili Province was the only province that circled the capital, so each Qing Dynasty's emperor thought highly of the governors in Baoding. Very often it was the emperor who would choose his favorite official to be the governor. This governmental office building is composed of three parts, the middle part, where most of the building openwere built, the eastern side and the western side part. Now Only the middle part is open to the public. Mancheng Han Dynasty Tombs Mancheng Han Dynasty Tombs are situated on half way up the hill 1.5 km west of Mancheng County, 25 km west of Baoding. This tomb complex is composed of the tomb of Liu Sheng and his wife Douwan, 120meters apart. Liu Sheng was the first emperor of Zhongshan State( now Baoding), Western Han Dynasty over 2000 years ago.Liu Sheng's Tomb is 51.7 meters long, 37.5 meters wide, and 6.8 meters tall, with a total volume of 2700 cubic meters. The tomb is made of the passageway, the southern and northern side tunnel, the middle hall and the back hall. It is in the back hall that the coffin was rested. Douwan's Tomb is 39.7 meters long, but with a longer side tunnel, and the total volume is over 3000 cubic meters. There e are over 10,000 articles excavated from these two tombs in total. Many of them are among the top category of the unearthed artifacts, like the Changxin Palatial Lantern, the Jade Clothes sewn with gold thread.
