History: As the northern gate of Beijing, Zhangjiakou has always been the battlefield in history. In the Spring and Autumn period, the northern part was inhabited by the Hun and, while the northern part was the territory of Yan Kingdom and Dai Kingdom. In 1917, Zhangjiakou was the capital of Chahar Province and in 1939 was set up as Zhangjiakou Special City. Until 1952, Zhangjiakou was under the domain of Hebei Province.
Climate: Zhangjiakou has a continental monsoon climate with four distinctive seasons. Due to the Siberia anticyclone, the winter is dry, cold and long and the summer is hot and humid with the influence of the East Asian monsoon. The sunshine hour is between 2800-3100 hours. The monthly 24-hour average temperature ranges from−8.3 °C in January to 23.7 °C in July, and the annual mean is 8.81 °C .
Transportation: Air-Zhangjiakou Ningyuan Airport is about 9km southeast of Zhangjiakou downtown and is open to navigation in 16th, June, which is viewed as the air bridge of Zhangjiakou.
Railway- Beijing-Baotou railway and Dalian-Qinhuangdao railway are across from west to east in Zhangjiakou city. There are two railway stations in this area, serving trains to most of the major cities of China such as Beijing, Datong, Handan, Shijiazhuang, etc.
Highway- National Road 110, 207,109,112 as well as Provincial Road 119 pass through the city. It takes only 3 hours from Beijing to Zhangjiakou.
Local Specialties: It is said that Zhangjiakou has three treasures including Chinese Yam, You Face and Fur-line jacket.

Attractions: Zhangbei Grassland- Zhangbei Grassland (张北草原) consists of Zhongdu Grassland and Anguli Grassland. In Qing Dynasty, it was once a place for emperors to go hunting. It is a natural grassland without pollution. Blue sky, white cloud, groups of house, singing birds, clean air and cool weather make it an ideal summer resort for city residents.
Qingyuan Tower Qingyuan Tower (清远楼), situated in the center of Xuanhua, Zhangjiakou City, is also highly reputed as the Second Yellow Crane Tower. It is a multi-angular grandeur tower sitting on top of an 8-meter high squared rampart with an arch on each side. The 25-meter high tower has the appearance of being a three-storey building, however, it is only two-storey actually. It was first constructed in 1482 and nowadays it is one of the artistic, architectural and cultural remains from ancient China.
