We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Ancient Wrestling

Ancient wrestling(角抵) is a pairwise power activity which is similar to wrestling and sumo. In the ancient times, it’s a fighting skill. Later, it became a method to train solders. Now, it is a kind of folk acrobatic with entertain features.

The origin of ancient wrestling can be traced back to the Remote Ages. At that time, when the Chiyou people fight with the Yellow Emperor, their heads were equipped with pointed items which were similar to knife and sword, looked like the bull with angles. When they were fighting, the fight with their hands and feet, and they also use the pointed items to attack their opponents. Their enemy couldn’t resist this attack, so the Chiyou people won a lot. Later, this method was developed into the activity of pairwise people wrestling.

To the Qin and Han dynasties, the ancient wrestling activities were very popular. But at that time, ancient wrestling was no longer a means of competing battle, but as an activity into a game with a certain performance components. Due to fear of the people to revolt Qin Shi Huang, so they collected the weapons, stop teaching military knowledge, truce, letting martial folk in wrestling to vent, so the imperial throne was safe.

In Jin Dynasty, wrestling got another name: sumo. To the Tang Dynasty, the two names were both referred the ancient activity. Sumo became famous after Song Dynasty. In the capital city of the Northern Song Dynasty, there would be held the sumo race twice in one year and it has become a popular entertainment activity.

In Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties, sumo can be divided into two types. One is the formal competition with the features of “contest in boxing or martial arts”. The other one is the sumo played in common houses with the features of performance and it is less fierce than the former one. When there was sumo performance, people would crowded around the stage.

Among various performance, ancient wrestling performance was sure the most popular show. Sumo's clothing, mostly followed the previous generation of the old system. Both side of games were shirtless, barefoot and legs in light pants (there were also participants wore footwear), only in a bundle between hips and crotch. This is very similar to Japan's sumo. From the ancient wrestling to sumo to wrestling, the prevailing tradition of the Chinese nation through thousands of years in the form of more power, has a long and colorful history. It is a wonderful work in our national traditional sports.
