We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Bailuyuan Iron Forging Skills

Iron forging is a primitive way of forging method and it has more than 2000 years of history in China. As early as the Spring and Autumn period, the Qin State located in the hinterland of Guanzhong areas firstly used and popularized iron ware. As a result, Qin State economy gained considerable development and Qin State became the most powerful and prosperous state at that time.

Since the Qin Dynasty unified the six countries, the Qin dominator carried out iron forging within the country in legal form and it could be divided into official furnace and folk furnace. The official furnace was responsible for the production of weapons and large national sacrificial utensils. The folk furnace was responsible for the production of living appliances and production tools.

Along the bank of the Chanhe River and Bahe River, and Bailuyuan areas, are the capital place for Qin State. Iron forging skills were significantly developed and orderly inherited right here. As a folk artistry and means of livelihood, iron forging skills kept its flag flying for decades in Bailuyuan and the surrounding villages. After the opening and reform, because of the high mechanization of agricultural production, Bailuyuan iron forging skills(白鹿原打铁技艺) were weakening.

The iron forging craftsman is called blacksmith, and the place for iron forging is called smithy. The corollary equipment includes bellows, an anvil, a hammer and pliers. Ironware finished product divided into three categories: one is farm implements, such as iron plow, iron rake, hoe, pick axes, shovels, sickles and so on; and second is household items, such as knives, spatula, planer knives, scissors and door insert; third is weapons, such as knives, guns, swords, halberd, ax, hook and fork.

Today, a few hundred miles of Bailuyuan now is hard to find a professional blacksmith and blacksmith skills successor. But its products are still indispensable living and production. From the cultural perspective, the blacksmith skills and ironware products have great value and significance for research of the development of agricultural production, the people and the history of lifestyle and cold weapons of war. In 2009, Bailuyuan iron forging skills are recommended by Baqiao Culture and Sports Bureau for the second batch of the district-level intangible cultural heritage items.
