We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Red Mountain

Red Mountain (红山), situated in Red Mountain park in Urumqi city, gets its name for the mountains in red color. Red Mountain is viewed as the symbol of prosperity of Urumqi city. It looks like a dragon stands in the center of Urumqi. The mountain is 1.5km from east to west with a width of 1km. The highest point is 910meters high above the sea level. It consists of purplish red glutenite which was sedimentary deposited about 2,500,000,000 years ago.

According to the legend, in ancient time a red dragon ran away from Heavenly Lake, but it was cut in two sections by the Queen Mother. Then, the cut parts form two mountains, the west one called Yamalik Mountain and the east one named Red Mountains, meanwhile the sword became Urumqi river.

A pagoda on the top of Red mountain remains undamaged through over 200 years. “Pagoda inflected in setting sun” is one of eight odd landscapes in Urumqi. The pagoda was originally built in 1788 with blue bricks in the height of 10.6 meters. When the sun is shining in the west, the pagoda is embraced in red light just like heiligenschein in fairy tale.
