History: Shannan Prefecture is one of the cradles of ancient civilization in Tibet so that it has a long history and splendid culture. About forty or fifty thousand years ago, Tibetan ancestors had thrived along the Yarlung region. About at the beginning of the 2nd century BC, people living in the vicinity of the Yarlung evolved tribes. The first generation of Zamprogna Nie Chi unified the yak tribe, build aligned regime and established the hereditary descendants Zamprogna system.
Around the 6th century, the Yarlung area enter into the slave society. Residents have been able to smelt iron, copper, silver, manufactured metal weapons. In mid-7th century, thirty second generation Zamprogna Srongtsen Gampo conquered other small tribes, unified Tibet Plateau and established the Tibetan government. And then he gradually moved the political, economic and cultural center from Qiongjie to Lhasa.
In 1240, Mongol Prince Godan trooped into Tibet. After Liangzhou Alliance, the central government of the Yuan Dynasty took Tibet into effective jurisdiction, ending 400 years of the split situation. In successive dynasties, Tibet was under their jurisdiction.
On May 23, 1951, Tibet was peaceful liberated. By the end of December, the CPC Tibet Work Committee appointed in Shannan fiscal procurement station. In 1952, the CPC set up Gyantse sub-committee, Shannan belongs to the jurisdiction of CPC Gyantse committee. On March 29, 1969, the Revolutionary Committee of Shannan Prefecture was established. 12 counties was under the jurisdiction of the Revolutionary Committee. October 1978, the Shannan Revolutionary Committee was renamed Shannan prefecture.
Climate: Shannan has a temperate arid climate and the southern border area is a plateau sub-frigid semi-arid climate. Average annual rainfall is less than 450 mm and the rainfall is more concentrated in the rainy season from June to September. The whole area is 2600-3300 hours of sunshine per year. The lowest annual average temperature is 6 ℃ and the highest annual temperature is up to 8.8 ℃; the highest temperature is 31 ℃ (Gajah), the lowest temperature of minus 37 ℃ (Cona). The average annual wind speed is about 3 m / s, the maximum wind speed is 17 m / s. Wind period mainly in December to next March.
