We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Grind Smashed Bean Ball

Grind Smashed Bean Ball(擂沙圆) is a traditional snack in Shanghai and it has a history of more than 70 years. It is an important part of Shanghai culture. Grind smashed bean ball is made of various kinds of cooked rice dumplings and sweetened bean paste powder. Grind smashed bean ball not only has the flavor of rice dumplings and sweetened bean, but also free from soup, so it is easy to carry and loved by many Shanghai people.

Qiaojiashan is a place name, originally referred to a residential city of Shanghai Qiao Jia Bang (now Qiaojia Road) on. Because there is a fence around the phase around, Qiaojiashan got the name. By the end of Qing Dynasty, someone here opened a pastry shop and named the shop according to its location.

Qiaojiashan confectionary paid attention to the choice of materials, so it had fine production and all kinds of food of which were particular. Among various kinds of desserts, grind smashed bean ball were most well-known in Shanghai, so Qiaojiashan has become one of Shanghai's famous names.

In 1930s, because of city development, Qiaojia Road is located in a remote place in the city, the business of the snack shop gradually became poor. Until the 1940s, someone saw that business of Qiaojiashan snack shop was well, so he opened a snack shop named Qiaojiashan confectionery store in the intersection of Xiangyang Road and Yongjia Road, specializing in making and selling high exquisite dessert.

Because the place where the confectionery shop located was better than the Qiaojia Road in the city, and soon people began to call the shop name as a place name, known here as Qiaojiashan. Later, in order to distinguish between the two places, generally divided into Qiaojiashan in southern city and Qiaojiashan in western district.

After the liberation in 1956, "Fortune House restaurant" located in the west gate of the southern city move out of the downtown because of the construction, Qiaojia Road Qiaojiashan pastry shop then moved to the restaurant site. Because it is located in the downtown, so the west Qiaojiashan pastry shop has become a famous shop in Shanghai. People also called the shop name as the geographical name, so the original Qiaojiashan in Qiaojia Road is rarely use.

According to legend, in the late Qing Dynasty, an old lady in Shanghai City three arches (now three arches Road) had a rice dumpling shop. In order to facilitate customers to take home to eat the cooked rice dumplings, she found a trick that she could picked up the cooked rice dumplings, put them in in fried bean flour stirring, dumpling covered with red bean paste pink outer layer. This is no longer soup dumplings, so it is easy to carry and can be eaten either hot or cold, named "Grind Smashed Bean Ball." After creation, Shanghai Qiaojia Restaurant began to produce this kind of smashed bean balls in a large scale. And then frind smashed bean ball became one of Shanghai's traditional snacks.
