We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Nanjing Linggu Temple

Situated in the east of Dr. Yat-sen Mausoleum, Linggu Temple (灵谷寺) was built in 514 and renovated in the Ming Dynasty. It was built for the memorial of the master monk Bao Zhi under the decree of the Liang Emperor during the Southern Dynasties (420 - 589 AD), who was a Buddhist monk once traveled to India on a pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures.

The present Linggu Temple was rebuilt in 1930s. There is a memorial hall to the famous monk Xuanzang. The temple has a hall with a triple archway at the entrance, the ceiling of the hall is covered with colored glazes and the side walls are red.  The Wulingdian (Beamless Hall) is the only complete building left with a 22-meter height, 53.8-meter length and 37.85-meter width. The crescent-shaped pool on the south of the entrance is for freeing of captured animals in ancient China. It was built by about ten thousand soldiers under the direction of the Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang.

The temple is the representation of ancient Chinese stone and brick architecture, erected entirely without wood or a single nail. The Linggu Pagoda, 66 meters high, is the symbol of the temple. Its base is octagonal with nine stories. The whole structure of the pagoda is of granite and ferroconcrete. There is a spiral stairway as far as the top floor (252 steps in total). From the second level to the top one, eaves above the balconies which are for sightseeing purpose, decorated with blue-colored glazes.
