We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Suojiang Tower

The construction of Suojiang Tower(锁江楼) lasted for 18 years, which is initiated in Wanli era of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) in 1558, under the monitoring of Wuxiu, the sheriff of Jiujiang, named as Jiangtian Suoyao. The building consists of 3 storeys, with 4 cattle made from iron standing around, and the tower was named as Wenfeng. The 7-storey building is of masonry structure, featured by the cone shape on 6 sides and a total height of 35 meters. Besides, there is a copper bell hanging on the edge of the corner of each storey. The whole building was built of thick and sturdy stones, with in which there are murals, niches as well as archways, and an overlook of the view is also available once you ascend the ladder.

There is an inscription of Ming Dynasty preserved on the eastern wall of the inner tower, which is said to be the written of people with a given name of “Lao” in Dehua County. It is of great difficulty to the identification of the words on the wall after long years of erosion of wind and rain. According to the legend, the iron cattle had assisted Da Yu in flood controlling, hence 4 iron cattle were casted alongside the tower. It is said that there was a sort of connection between this building and the inundation disaster in Jiujiang. At that time, the residents in Jiujiang were under great suffering owing to the flowing flood brought by Yangtze River; in order to dispose a confinement of the aggressive dragon that provoked the problem, they erected the building and the tower merely 300 hundreds away from the Yangtze River, in an attempt to worship the God for the placid of life.

The building suffered its fatal attack during a night in August, 1606 (Ming Dynasty), when there was an earthquake hit the city, which brought about heavy winds and a drenching rain. The rock foundation was trembled when waves, over 23-meter high, roared and washed the land. Songjiang Building and 2 iron cattle were thrown into the cold water, whereas the tower and another 2 iron cattle remained.

after the restoration and cautious maintain in Jiangqing of Qing Dynasty(1616-1912), the building was again attacked during the flame of war in 1853, while the tower remain like a sturdy giant, standing majestically alongside the river, making no account of the aggressive enemy. Helplessly the enemy addressed their troops back and left 3 shot holes on the body of the tower, the biggest of which was about a meter square, while the tower tilted 67 centimeters toward the direction of the river. Subjected to the erosion of winds and rain, warfare and gunfire, earthquake and violent shake, the tower is still loftily standing along the river, overlooking the whole city.
