We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Yumen Pass

Yumen Pass (玉门关) is situated in desert about 90 km northwest of Dunhuang city. It was built in B.C. 111, the throat pass to North Road in Western Region from Silk Road. The well-preserved loess city wall is 10-meter high, 3-meter wide at the top and 5-meter wide at the bottom. It occupies an area of 633 square meters with a length of 24 meters from east to west and a width of 26.4 meters from north to south.

The history of Yumen Pass could be traced back to 2,000 years ago, in the period of Wu Emperor of Han Dynasty (B.C. 156-B.C.87). Hun had have a great threaten to Han nationality since Qin Dynasty. In the beginning of the Han Dynasty, Hun beat Donghu in the east, drove out Yueshi in the west and captured Hexi region. Since it invaded the territory of Han frequently, Han kingdom attempted to exchange for temporary peace through Peace-Making marriage.

At the time of Wu Emperor of Han, a large-scale military response was counterattacked instead of policy of Peace-Making marriage. Huo Qubing, the eminent general of Han Dynasty, made a heave blow to the right troop of Hun. The same year, Han kingdom divided Hexi into Wuwei and Jiuquan prefectures and added Zhangye and Dunhuang prefecture in B.C. 111, and established Yumeng Pass and Yang Pass. From this time on, Yumen Pass and Yang Pass were proved to be the important pass in the west of Hexi Corridor in Western Han Dynasty.

On 22nd, June, 2014, Yumen Pass relics was listed into the World Heritage List as a site of road net from Changan to Tianshan gallery in the Silk Road, which was jointly applied by China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in the 38th the World Heritage Committee Meeting held in Qatar.
