We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Yang Pass

Yang Pass (羊关), an ancient city buried by desert, is situated in Gudong desert about 70 km southwest of Dunhuang city. Yangguan, facing Yumen Pass in its south, was also the important gate to Western Region in Han Dynasty and the only way in the south Silk Road.

As early as 3,000 years ago, Yang pass was an oasis basin due to its abundant water resource. In order to resist the harassment of Hun Western Han Dynasty set up Wuwei, Zhangye, Jiuyuan and Dunhuang prefectures in the Hexi Corridor, meanwhile, established Yumen Pass and Yang Pass.

Since Western Han Dynasty, dynasties guarded this area as the important strategic point. Numerous businessmen, visitors and emissaries checked out here. Some men of letters highly praised Yang Pass with poem. Xuan Zang, the monk going on a pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures turned back to Changas throught Yang Pass after got the scripture in India.

In Han and Tang Dynasty, troop in Yang Pass lived on the water. Usually, the head water of Xitu channel was dry up, while the lower reaches flowed to north. Owing to the flash flood from time to time, the riverbed was broadened and massive of sand was accumulated in downstream. Sand was carried by north-west wind and shaped pieces of sand valley, in this way, Yang Pass was gradually buried by water and sand.
