We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Mogao Caves

Mogao Caves (莫高窟), also named Thousand-Buddha Cave, is situated 25km southeast of the city of Dunhuang. It was built originally in Former Qin period, formed into a massive scale going through Sui, Tang, West Xia and Yuan Dynasties. The Mogao Caves temples rise three levels along a 1.6 kilometer escarpment near the Daquan River.

Every visitor to Dunhuang will be overpowered by its rich complexity and astonishing details. It is largest article place of Buddhism in existence including 735 caves, 45,000 square meters’ fresco and 2,415 colorful sculptures. It is the highlight during your Hexi Corridor Trip.

Mogao Caves, together with Yungang Grottoes in Datong, Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang and Maijishan Grottoes in Tianshui are called the Four Grottoes of China. In 1961, Mogao Caves was authorized as one of the Cultural Relic under State Protection and in 1987, Mogao Caves was listed as the World Cultural Heritage.

Nine-storey Building

The Cave No.96 was excavated in the early period of Tang Dynasty, where a Buddha with a height of 35.5 meters is inside. According to the record, the Buddha is Maitreya Buddha carved in A.D.695. In front of the cave, there is a nine-storey building which is the symbol of Mogao Caves. Originally, it was only four storeys, then added into five floors in the late of Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in Song Dynasty.

Scripture-storing Cave
The Cave No.17 is also named scripture-storing cave, established in late of Tang Dynasty. In 11th century, a number of Buddhist sutras, Buddha painting, Buddhist instruments and other documents relevant to Buddhism were hided in the cave due to the war. The discovery of scripture-storing cave plays an important role to research the history of China and mid-Asian area.
