We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Double Seventh Festival

Double Seventh Festival is also called Qi Qiao Festival, it is a traditional festival in China. According to legend, the cowherd and the girl-weaver may get together on the on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. According to the "Jingchu Chronicle" records, women tread the seven-hole needle with colorful thread one after another. As the customs widely spread, Double Seventh Festival became the theme of many poets in Six Dynasties period. Except for ode to the cowherd and the girl-weaver, the poets also ode to thread the needle on that day. To celebrate the Double Seventh Festival has been an important ritual in Chinese culture.

The History of Double Seventh Festival
The Double Seventh Festival originated in Han Dynasty on which day girls would begging for the skills, such as the skill of doing sewing work and making some small ornaments. In Northern and Southern Dynasties, the Cowherd and the Girl-weaver maturing as a love story, the Double Seventh Festival has become a popular, colorful festival. Double Seventh Festival was getting more popular activities, and "Qi Qiao" move has become the most popular folk festival activities.


















Sui and Tang Dynasties was a period of great development of the Double Seventh Festival, although their customs basically the same with Wei and Jin Dynasties, but the scale and pomp was far more magnificent than the former. For example, buildings and pavilions decorated with colorful silk fabrics can be seen everywhere. And there are nearly one thousand poems chant for the Double Seventh Festival in Full Collection of Tang Poems.

When the days come to Song and Yuan Dynasty, the Double seventh Festival developed into a grand meeting. There was a market selling goods used in Double Seventh Festival in the capital city. People began to prepare goods from the first day of the seventh lunar month. And since that day, the streets are crowded with people and vehicles, thus making the Double Seventh Festival a grand meeting.  

In Ming and Qing Dynasties, Double Seventh Festival was one of the most important folk festivals.  The main activities of the Qing Dynasty in Double Seventh Festival was to place fruits and other food and incense on the court for worship led by Cowherd and Girl-Weaver.  

Today, Tanabata is still a romantic traditional festival. But many custom activity has weakened or disappeared, only a symbol of love, loyalty Vega Legend, has been handed to people, so it is called Double Seventh Festival as the "Chinese Valentine's Day."


















Folk Legend
Cowherd and Weaver Girl legend is one of the four Chinese folklore. It is a Chinese folklore which has been handed down from the ancient times and it is the most widely circulated local legend. As a result, it has a very important position in the history of the Chinese Folk Literature.

According to legend, the Cowboy’s parents died young, and often subject to be abused by his brother and his sister-in-law, accompanied only one cow. One day the cow gave him a trick, to teach him how to marry a wife Weaver. Until that day comes, beautiful fairies went to the river to bath and play in the water. Then the Cowherd hidden in the reeds suddenly ran out, and took away the girl-weaver’s clothes. Panic fairies flew away hastily, except the Weaver. Under the plea of the Cowboy, Weaver agreed to be his wife. After marriage, Cowherd and Weaver Girl became farming men and women weaver, love each other and their life was very happy. Cowherd and Weaver gave birth to a child and a daughter. Later, when the cow to die, it told Cowboy to take its skin to in order to help to the emergency. After the Cow's death, the couple reluctantly stripped its leather and buried it in the hillside.

When the Cowherd and Weaver’s marriage was known by heaven Emperor and the Queen Mother, they flew into a rage and ordered a god to recapture the Girl-Weaver. The god captured the Girl-Weaver when the cowherd was not at home. Then the Cowherd went back home and found that the Weaver Girl was not at home. He quickly put on leather, bear two children to chase. She was about to catch up, the Queen Mother used her gold hairpin a draw to the Galaxy. And the Milky Way which used to be silent become monstrous, the Cowherd could never cross it. Since then, the Cowherd and Weaver Girl could only watch each other with tears in eyes across the river forever. The Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother also fail to beat the sincere feelings between them, allowing them to meet once a year on the seventh day of every seventh lunar month. According to legend, on the seventh day of every seventh lunar month, magpies on earth to go flying in the Milky Way as a Magpie Bridge for Cowherd and Weaver Girl to ride.
