We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Straw Plaited Article

Straw plaited Article is a kind of handicraft which use various flexible raw herbs materials to process and weave. Geographically widespread growth of its raw materials, and easy to get and easy to make, so straw craft is very popular among Chinese people. In order to spread the work for a durable long-term, weavers began to use ribbon instead of straw. Some of them use a variety of pre-stained grass to weave a variety of patterns, while others weave first and then printed decorative patterns. Both of the two patterns are not only economical and practical, but also beautiful.

Straw plaited is widely distributed in China, the main producing areas includes Shandong, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Henan and other places. The farmers and artists use local corn bran, grass mat, grass, wheat straw and other rich local resources to weave hats, baskets, slippers, bags, carpets, sleeping mat and other daily necessities which have a wide variety of colors, excellent quality and rich style of simple elegance. Straw plaited articles are great inventions of Chinese people and Chinese culture.


















Raw materials of straw plaited article in Yangtze River region always use wild yellow grass, Su grass, mat grass, rough melic herb, bulrushes, Chinese alpine rush, iris grass, wool grass, bamboo strip, indocalamus leaf, etc. There are also craftsmen use cultivated crops straw as raw material.  Straws suitable for knitting should have smooth grass blade, stems smooth, less section, fine quality and flexibility, strong pull and folding endurance.

The fodder should first select, clean up and do preliminary processing. Straw mats shoes and other daily necessities are most unique in the Yangtze River basin, spread in Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and other places. Zhejiang is a straw production base in China and from the 1840s, they had exported abroad. The main varieties are Hebei, Henan and Shandong straw knitting; Shanghai Jiading, Guangdong Gaoyao and Dongguan yellow straw, Zhejiang buntal straw, Hunan and Taiwan Province binata straw mats and so on.

Straw Mat
Straw mats refers weave mats weaved of flexible stems. General mats cannot be folded and can be rolled up. But the improved straw mat can be folded for storage. Straw mats have relatively strong absorption. South China Su Mat, Yizheng Pu Mat and Zhejiang Ning Mat are known as three famous mats in China.


















Straw Sandals
Straw scandals are knitted with straw which is a production of rice cultivating culture. Straw scandals are easy to knit. You should just knit the shoe sole and then knit the straw above the feet, bundle the straw under the shoe sole. Straw sandals are cheap and at the same time very good and walk briskly. You can either wear it to climb mountains or do farming work. At dusk, if the straw sandal is worn out, people would just throw it away.

Other Varieties
Shanghai Jiading is famous for straw daily crafts. As early as the period of Emperor Guangxu of Qing Dynasty, yellow grass straw knitting has been very popular. In recent centuries, yellow grass has been grown by people. There are straw hat, straw bag, straw mat and so on. Yellow grass straw has simple but elegant pattern which is both beautiful and practical.

Shandong folk straw plaited article emerged about 6000 years ago. Folk grass weaving materials can be divided into wheat straw, corn bran straw, rushes straw, Langya straw, horse stumped straw, triangular straw, straw knitting, flax straw and so on. Among all of them, wheat straw, corn bran straw and rushes straw are most common. According to the use, there are baskets, baskets, boxes, plates, boxes, tea mats, cushion, chopsticks cage, rice bags, strainer, sieve dish, lid, fans, pots sets, paper baskets, letter inserted, cup sets, toys and so on.
