We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Chinese Great Wall

Great Wall (长城) is a gigantic military project which was built in ancient China to defense the invasion from northern nomadic tribe in different stages. The existing great wall relics were mainly constructed in Ming Dynasty with a total length of 8851.8 kilometers. Ming Great Wall start with Jiayuguan in the west and end with Hushan Great Wall in the east across 15 provinces including Beijing, Tianjin, Qinghai, Shandong, Inner Mongolia and so on.

The construction of Great Wall was dated from Spring and Autumn and Warring State period, about over 2,000 years ago. Its scale was up to maximum in Qin Dynasty, Han Dynasty and Ming Dynasty period. Great Wall is both a great miracle created by our ancient laboring people and a witness of Chinese culture. In Dec., 1987, great wall was as a World Heritage Site. The great wall relics survival are as follow:

Badaling Great Wall
Badaling Great Wall (八达岭长城), situated in Yanqing, Beijing, is the most representative section of Ming Great Wall. With an altitude of 1,015 meters, it was both the vital military pass in Ming Dynasty and the important barrier to capital Beijing. Badaling Great Wall is the site of the most visited section of the Great Wall of China where more than 300 celebrities including Obama, Nixon, Margaret Thatcher, etc once went sight-seeing.


















Mutianyu Great Wall
Mutianyu Great Wall (幕田峪长城) is lied in Huairou District, Beijing, about 73 kilometers from Beijing downtown. At present, it is the longest section with a total length of 5,400 meters. Mutianyu Great Wall connects Gubeikou in the east and Juyongguan in the west. As one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall, the Mutianyu section used to be the crucial strategic spot defending the capital. Besides, the forest-coverage in Mutianyu is over 90 percent, surrounded by woodland and streams. Former U.S. President Clinton and former British prim minister John Mejor once went sightseeing in Mutianyu Great Wall.
 

Simatai Great Wall
Simatai Great Wall (司马台长城) is situated in Miyun, about 120 kilometers to Beijing. It is 5.4 kilometers long with 35 beacon towers. Simatai Great Wall is well-known for steepness, odd and complete. Professor Luo Zhewen once said: Chinese Great Wall is the beast of world, and Simatai is the best of the Great Wall. It is the only ancient building retaining the original appearance of Ming Dynasty. In 1987, UNESO has designated Simatai Great Wall as one of the World Cultural Heritage Sites.

Juyongguan Great Wall
Juyongguan Great Wall (居庸关长城) is in Changping District, 50 kilometers to Beijng center. It is one of the three greatest mountains passes of the Chinese Great Wall together with Jiayuguan and Shanhaiguan.

Gubeikou Great Wall
Gubeikou Great Wall (古北口长城), as the most complete great wall system, consists of Beiqi Great Wall and Ming Great Wall. Gubeikou is the fortree between Shanhaiguan Pass and Juyongguan and had always been a battleground in history.


















Jiakou Great Wall
Jiankou Great Wall (箭扣长城) is situated in Huairou District, about 73km north of Beijing. Jiankou Great Wall features the most steep and majestic without any artificial modification. It has been regarded as the most picturesque section of Great Wall>

Jinshanling Great Wall
Jinshanling Great Wall (金山岭长城) spans the branch of Yanshan Mountain which is in the border between Miyun district, Beijing and Luanping county, Chengde city, Hebei province. Jinshanling Great Wall connects Sinatai Great Wall in the east and Gubeikou Great Wall in the west. It has been listed on World Cultrual Heritage by UNESCO.

Shanhaiguan Great Wall
Shanhaiguan Great Wall (山海关长城), in Qinhuangdao city, Hebei province, is the where the Great Wall of China meet the ocean. With a total length of 26 kilometers, Shanhaiguan Great Wall is composed of Guancheng, East Luocheng, West Luocheng, South Yicheng, North Yicheng, Weiyuancheng and Ninghaicheng.

Jiayuguan Great Wall
Jiayuguan Great Wall (嘉峪关长城) is the west end of Ming Great Wall with a total length of 733 meters and a height of 11.7 meters. It is also an important stop along the Silk Road.
