Heniantang Chinese Medicine (鹤年堂中医药) is said to be the first century-old enterprise in Beijing. As one part of Beijing culture, it is established in the 3rd year of Yongle, Ming Dynasty (in 1405) by Ding Henian, a notable poem and exper on medical health. It is 15 years earlier than Forbidden City and the Temple of Heave and 125 years than the Temple of Earth. The original locations was in Teimen Hutong in Caishikou Street in Xuanwu District.
Ding Henian was born in a noble family in Yuan Dynasty that was proficient in medicine science and health science generation after generation. Ding Henian obtained the essence of Chinese medicine, set up Heniantang and made a great contribution to medical field. He passed away at the age of 90. Although he had gone through all kinds of hardships in his all life, he had white hair and rosy complexion.
Ding Henian is the pioneer to set up a store on the theme of health preservation. He established Heniantang Chinese Medicine in 1405 that was located in Tiemen Hutong in Caishikou Street, Xuanwu District and was close to Niujie Street. In 1999, it was authorized as “time-honored brand of China” by the departments concerned.In 1556, Heniantang opened five braches sequentially in Dongan Market, in Xidan and Taoranting. In 1936, Xian branch was built up. The parent company was still in Caishikou.
In the long course of history, Heniantang was managed successively by Ding family, Cao family, Wang family and Liu family who were all imperial physicians. It is well-known for the exquisite medical skill and unique pesticide effect.
Heniantang has invented 108 kinds of medicated diet, 138 sorts of medicated porridge, 36 types of medicated wine and 82 kinds of medicated soup. Most of the formulations came from imperial and folk secret recipes. Heniantang set up a ginseng production base in Jilin, meanwhile, it is cooperating with large enterprises to develop new drug for cerebropathy, hepatopathy, osteopathy and so on. As the representative of Chinese culture, Heniantang Chinese Medicine will make a contribution to the development of Chinese civilization.
