We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Pinggu Ditty

Pinggu ditty (平谷调) is sort of traditional drama based on Pinggu dialect and Laoting tune. It is said by relevant artiest that Pinggu ditty came into being at the end of 19th century by adopting the Laoting tune. In 2006, Pinggu ditty was listed into intangible cultural heritage in Beijing. The tune of Pinggu ditty is a structure of endless loop, including start plank, fast plank, urgent plank and so on.

Development of Pinggu ditty
Wang Xianzhang is the first artist that brought Pinggu ditty to the Northeast China. He once performed Ten Golden Elixir and Double Boomerang Tales at a teahouse in Dalian, and take an exam held by a drum book study institute in Shenyang and headed the list. He was well-known in Northeast China at that time.


















Wife of Zhang Zuolin appreciated with Wang Xianzhang and supported him to establish a school where Gushu artists were serviced for free and can hold their own performance. As a result, Pinggu ditty created by Wang Xianzhang developed for a long time. At the age of 50, Wang Xianzhang returned back to Pinggu-his hometown, took apprentice and passed on the art.

Wang Peichen, his female successor developed Pinggu ditty into “Tiepian Drum” that characters with the sad feeling. Comparing to Pinggu ditty, Tiepian Drum disposal the native accent and added some element of Chinese opera on its original basement. In 1920, artist Zhang Shicheng changed Pinggu ditty into Pinggu Drum, singing and speaking with a tune of cadence. Du Runqi, as the fourth generation of native artist of Pinggu ditty, was chosen as the intangible cultural heritage representative successors of Pinggu ditty.
