We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Beijing Qinshu

Beijing Qinshu (北京琴书) is a sort of folk opera prevailing in Northern China, accompanied by yangqin, erhu (two-stringed bowed instrument), sanxian (three-stringed bowed instrument) and sihu (four-stringed bowed instrument). Due to a lack of successor, Beijing Qinshu may end up without going further. As one part of Beijing culture, it has been listed into Beijing intangible cultural heritage.

Beijing Qinshu is also a sing and talking art. The talking part among sing highlights Beijing dialect. Rhythm is full of variety varying from fast to slow and from high to low. It has a very high academic value and educational value. The tune of Beijing Qinshu is close to Pinggu ditty. Its content in early period centers on long story such as the Romance of Seven Kingdoms, the Legend of Huilong, and so on.

Historical Development
In Qing Dynasty, the predecessor of Beijing Qinshu, five-sound drum, gaiing its popularity in the suburb of Beijing and Anci county in Hebei Province. At the end of the 19th century, gradually, there were professional performers on stages of Beijing and Tianjin. In 1930s, Qu Qingshan, artist in Tong district in Beijing accompanied sing with yangqin instead of Sanxian.

In 1940s, Guan Xueceng and Wu Changbao made chorus in Beijing dialect and added Sihu as companied instrument. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the art was named Beijing Qinshu formally. It payed more attention to the oralization of polytextual and was much fitter for telling realistic stories.

Guan Xueceng (1922-2006), one of the most excellent artist, is considered to be the leading scholar of Beijing Qinshu. He learned the art of Qinshu at the age of 14 from Chang Deshan. He joined to organize the Beijing troup of ballad singers and composed new programs positively.

During the period of cooperation with Wu Changbao, his accompanist, he succeeded in improving danqin drum and named Beijing Qinshu. In his lifetime, he performed 20,000 times and once made performance in Korea twice.
