We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Lantern Festival

As one part of Beijing culture, lantern Festival (元宵灯会) is Chinese traditional folk activity held in 15th, January. The 15th day of January is the first night of fullmoon and the begin of new year, so people held lantern festival to celebrate. In ancient, lunar calendar January was named “xiao”. Lantern, as traditional folk handicraft, is made with paper or silk as skin and bamboo or wood strips as bone. Then put a candle or light inside.

On 15th, January, lanterns of variety looks like hundreds of flowers in bloom. Traditional lanterns  are made o the basis of ancient story such as trotting horse lantern, jade rabbit lantern, peacock lantern, Jiang Ziya bestowing gods, Sun Wukong rose in heavenly palace, etc. Some lantern are fabricated into vegetable and animals styles including cabbage lantern, calabash lantern, watermelon lantern, chilli lantern, cat lantern, dog lantern, sheep lantern, baby lanter…… These lantern are in lifelike image and bright colors, being a feat for the eyes.

Lantern festival originated from Eastern Han Dynasty. Emperor Ming of Han established Baima Temple in Luoyang. Every night in 15th, January, both palace and Baima temple lighted lamp to worship Buddha. Afterwards, the ceremony spread from court to folk, central plain to the whole country.

The large-scaled lantern festival of documented was originated in the period of Emperor Yang in Sui Dynasty, which was held in Duan Gate---the main entrance of the palace. Many poets in Tang Dynasty described the lively scene of lantern festival. Song Dynasty pay more attention to lantern festival. The activity was carried out for 5 days with more various lanterns. Guessing lantern riddles was another entertainment in lantern festival invented in Song Dynasty. Riddles were written on paper and attached in lanterns. The interesting riddle was good to awaken intelligence, so it was popular by every class.

Beijing Lantern Festival
Lantern Festival in Prince Gong’s Mansion was held in Shishahai on the theme of royal lanterns. On the evening of 2nd, March, more than 50 traditional royal lanterns were lighted. Facial makeup, skit and shadow puppet all appeared.
